Golf tournament to help provide nutritional support

By: Amy Wagner | Culpeper Star-Exponent

With a heart for children in need, a local woman has organized a golf tournament to provide nutritional support to children in the Culpeper area, who would normally go without, during the school year.

All golfers are encouraged to tee off at the Culpeper Country Club on Friday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. and participate in a silent auction that closes at 3 p.m.? A $75 registration fee includes 18 holes of golf, a cart and lunch and the benefits to area kids are immeasurable.

The idea evolved out of a similar project facilitated at a church in Haymarket. Jennifer Hulse, who calls her project the Power Pack Program, wanted to provide children from Culpeper with weekend meals so they wouldn?t go without.?

After presenting her idea to her pastor, Randy Orndorff, at Culpeper United Methodist Church, Hulse was directed to the Missions committee. Receiving their support, Hulse, who moved to Culpeper from Texas in 2006, ran with the idea and CUMC agreed to provide the home for her project.

Initially, the Power Pack Program will provide 12 students from Emerald Hill Elementary School with two breakfast, two lunch, and two dinner meals each weekend, including two snacks and beverages. These students are on the reduced meal plan and their families have reached out for extra assistance.

The packs will be distributed, discreetly, every Friday throughout the school year and provide 12 to 14 individual servings of non-perishable food items such as tuna, pasta, rice, cereal, pop tarts, and drinks.

CUMC is a drop off site [in the Narthex] for those who wish to donate non-perishable food items. Food items will be packed in large zip lock bags before they are taken to Emerald Hill for distribution where they will be inconspicuously placed into specific backpacks.? The first packs will be distributed the day of the tournament.

Hulse, a 32-year-old ER nurse, has big expectations for the Power Pack Program.

?This golf tournament is the first of many,? she said.

?After Thanksgiving break we are opening the program to other students,? said Hulse explaining that Emerald Hill has 200 kids that use the reduced meal plan which is why she chose to start with that school.

?And Emerald Hill is the smallest school of need in Culpeper,? Hulse said.?

The tournament registration fee is $75 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart and lunch.

?The Power Pack Program receives only $17.40 of each registration so sponsors are very important. Hole sponsors are $100; cart sponsors are $200; event sponsors are $500 and all sponsorship money, which is tax deductible, goes directly to the Power Pack Program.

Sponsor banners will be placed at holes and on carts. Event sponsors will have signage at the registration table, which will be moved to silent auction table after the tournament starts. One event sponsor, Farm Credit and Country Mortgage, has already registered.

This year?s tournament is a better ball tournament with a shotgun start. Registration forms may be picked up at CUMC, beginning Sept. 5, and completed in advance though limited registration will be available at the tournament.?

Prizes, donated by Meadows Farm, will be awarded for closest to the hole and longest drive.?

A silent auction will begin at 10 a.m. and close at 3 p.m. with all proceeds going to the Power Pack Program. Gift baskets from local businesses, jewelry, photos and gift certificates to local restaurants, including It?s About Thyme, will be auction items.

Hulse, acknowledges that the Power Pack Program is initially serving as a test run and, after some tweaking, she said, ?It will be offered to other students, hopefully going county-wide in the future.?

Monetary donations can be made payable to CUMC with Power Pack Program denoted on the memo line.

Star Of The Week: Briony Tiwarie (Business Executive)

Born in Bartica and raised in Georgetown, Briony Tiwarie is the eldest of four children. Her parents moved to Georgetown when she was just a few weeks old, and she has lived there ever since ? with the exception of time spent abroad pursuing undergraduate and graduate studies.

As part of publishing our usual ?Star of the Week? GTI will also occasionally feature young people who have excelled and are serving in leadership positions in various areas; such as in the fields of arts, business, sports, academia or public service.

Briony earned her Master?s Degree with Honors in International Business at Nova Southeastern University in Florida, which was provoked by a strong interest in different cultures and business on a global perspective. She believes in thinking locally but acting globally since business is moving at a global speed and culture has a lot to do with how people think and act.
Briony is currently employed with BK Group of Companies as a Director. She related, ?I am focused on the growth of my company in its quest to continue to add to Guyana?s infrastructural and economic development. I hope to foster my own growth as well through experience with work and expanding my academic portfolio. The experience will be an asset as it will give me a better understanding and concrete foundation as I move forward in business.? Briony recently served on Guyana?s Manufacturing and Services Association Board for one year.
Briony explained that during her college years, she had some of the best experiences of her life. ?In addition to opportunities to study in countries such as Italy and Russia, I was also introduced to philanthropy. Becoming a member of Delta Phi Omega Sorority Inc., a philanthropic South Asian sorority, I developed an interest in community service. Through these experiences, I grew tremendously. I am now a member of another organization; ?Grant-a-Dream Inc.?, which dedicates its time and energies to the less fortunate in Guyana.?
Her heroes: ?My parents, I am very fortunate to be blessed with parents who have sacrificed everything to provide my siblings and I with a comfortable life. Through them I learned to be charitable, to never forget where I came from, and to always be humble. The struggles I saw them overcome, the passion within them to persevere, and their courage to continue to move forward even in the most difficult times inspired me to be where I am today.?
Her advice to young people: ?I would share the same advice my parents gave me when it comes to work, that is; it?s good to dream but if you don?t act on it then it makes no sense. Another man will be half way building while you?re still dreaming. Whatever you do in life, give it your all or nothing at all because what you sow is what you reap.?

Eyeless Australian fish have closest relatives in Madagascar

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A team of researchers from Louisiana State University and the American Museum of Natural History has discovered that two groups of blind cave fishes on opposite sides of the Indian Ocean are each other's closest relatives. Through comprehensive DNA analysis, the researchers determined that these eyeless fishes, one group from Madagascar and the other from similar subterranean habitats in Australia, descended from a common ancestor before being separated by continental drift nearly 100 million years ago. Their study, which appears in the journal PLoS ONE this week, also identifies new species that add to existing biological evidence for the existence of Gondwana, a prehistoric supercontinent that was part of Pangaea and contained all of today's southern continents.

"This is the first time that a taxonomically robust study has shown that blind cave vertebrates on either side of an ocean are each other's closest relatives," said Prosanta Chakrabarty, an assistant professor and curator of fishes at Louisiana State University's Museum of Natural Science. "This is a great example of biology informing geology. Often, that's how things work. These animals have no eyes and live in isolated freshwater caves, so it is highly unlikely they could have crossed oceans to inhabit new environments."

The cave fishes, of the genus Typhleotris in Madagascar and Milyeringa in Australia, are small -- less than 100 millimeters long -- and usually lack pigment, a substance that gives an organism its color and also provides protection from the sun's ultraviolet radiation. These characteristics, coupled with a lack of eyes and enhanced sensory capabilities, allow cave fishes to survive in complete darkness. For this reason, the fishes have very restricted distributions within isolated limestone caves. It's also why the newfound genetic relationship between the trans-oceanic groups is an exciting geological find.

"The sister-group relationship between cavefishes from Madagascar and Australia is a remarkable example of Gondwanan vicariance -- a geographical split dating back to the Late Cretaceous some 100 million years ago," said John Sparks, a curator in the Division of Vertebrate Zoology at the American Museum of Natural History. "The interesting thing about Madagascar's extant freshwater fish groups, with the exception of a single species, is that all exhibit relationship patterns that are in time with the Mesozoic breakup of Gondwana -- some are related to groups in India/Sri Lanka, and others to groups in Australia. Only a single freshwater species has its closest relative in nearby Africa."

One of the new species discovered by the researchers, which will be named in a future publication, is a novelty among cave fishes because it is fully and darkly pigmented. The analysis the researchers conducted for this fish's tree of life shows that it evolved from a pigment-free ancestor, indicating that some subterranean forms can "reverse" themselves for this character.

"It is generally thought that cave organisms are unable to evolve to live in other environments," Sparks said. "Our results, and the fact that we have recently discovered new cave fish species in both Madagascar and Australia belonging to these genera, are intriguing from another perspective: they show that caves are not so-called 'evolutionary dead ends.'"

Funding for the research expedition was provided by the Constantine S. Niarchos Expedition Fund, established by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to support the research of museum curators around the globe. This particular expedition turned into more of an adventure than the group was planning -- in fact, one of the new species has been given a moniker that means "big sickness" in Malagasy because of the dangers the team incurred while searching for specimens in this dry, inhospitable region of Madagascar.

"Only two specimens of the new pigmented form were recovered from the first cave we searched in Madagascar, despite the fact that we spent hours in this sinkhole," said Chakrabarty. "Even the locals hadn't been inside of it before."

Because remote locales with caving opportunities exist all over the world, the researchers are eager to pursue other opportunities for discovery.

"Conducting this research really developed my love for caving," said Chakrabarty. "You don't always find something exciting. But, when you consider how isolated many of these caves are, especially in places like Madagascar, and how unaffected they have been by the passage of time, you know that the fish in there are going to tell a really good story."

Jabra Solemate Bluetooth speaker hands-on, soles off

Hey, it's a shoe-themed Bluetooth speaker -- because, hey, why not, right? Jabra announced the punnily named Solemate yesterday, and we happened to run into one on the floor of this year's IFA. It's a small, solid little speaker with a hearty rubber sole that sits on the bottom, protecting the device from shocks and the like. The heel actually peels off, so you can replace it with different colors. Jabra had a slew of brightly colored options aside from the basic black and white, though apparently those won't be widely available at launch.

The pairing process is quite easy -- just flip the Bluetooth button on the side of the device and a glowing blue light will turn on -- not only that, but a friendly device will walk you through the process. Find the speaker on your device's drop down menu and you're good to go. As for the sound, it's surprisingly loud (120dB, to be exact). We walked off the show floor for a second to demo it, but it turned out we didn't need to. Oh, and when you're using a non-Bluetooth device, there's a wired connection that lives on the bottom of the sole that you can pull out.

All in all, it's a really solid and nicely built speaker -- and for its $200 asking price, we'd certainly hope so. The speaker has big volume buttons on the top and a carrying loop on its side. It also comes with a small black bag, which it can actually play through without dampening the sound too much. It'll hit the US on September 2nd, but you can pre-order it now, if you're eager.

Historic Turner Mortuary building up for sale | Ibiza Real Estate

Published: 30 August 2012 - Written by admin in section: Commercial

The original owner of the mansion, built in 1893, was George B. Douglas and family. In 1906, Douglas negotiated a house trade with Brucemore mansion owner, widow Caroline Sinclair. The structure has been the home of John R. Turner and Son funeral homes since 1924. Iowa artist Grant Wood was paid to help decorate the mortuary at that time. (Photo October 24, 1983 ? CEDAR RAPIDS Commercial real estate broker Scott Byers is hard-pressed to think of a similar building thats gone on the market in recent years in the Cedar Rapids area.

A former house-turned funeral home known as Turner Mortuary or the George B. Douglas mansion, 800 Second Ave. SE, has been listed for sale by the Linge family, owners of Cedar Memorial.

Its an interesting property to represent, Byers said. Its not your cookie-cutter real estate.

The 10,085 square-foot house, built in 1893, is listed for $645,000.

Byers noted that the building is on the National Register of Historic Places and contains design touches by artist Grant Wood, including iron gates and stained glass windows.

Grant Wood stands in his studio at 5 Turner Alley in Cedar Rapids. In the mid-1920s, he lived in the carriage house of the former George Douglas mansion, which was being converted to John B. Turner and Son Mortuary at the time.

From 1924 to 1935, Wood lived next to the home above a carriage house at 5 Turner Alley, where he painted American Gothic and other works.

The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art owns that studio a gift from the Linge family which is also on the National Register, but is not included in the sale.

Make Training Work With These Simple Tips! | Love My Pets GPS ...

Your dog might be hyperactive, shy or even a bit rebellious. Whatever his personality, your furry friend needs guidance to be the best dog he can be. A training routine will establish your roles and make him more likely to obey essential commands. These small steps can help carve the path to a happier, more well-behaved dog in little time.

Once your dog begins to master the commands you are giving him, change locations. Train him in a different room of the house, on your driveway, midway on your walk, in the park. Each new location offers new distractions. He might have trouble initially offering the behaviors, but soon he?ll be able to ignore the distractions, and he will be able to focus more on listening to your commands.

A great way to potty-train your puppy is to crate-train it. A dog won?t potty where it sleeps, so keep the puppy in his crate and let him out for a potty break at regular intervals and he will go. Eventually, your pup will learn that bathroom time is outdoor time. This type of training also prevents a lot of accidents.

Make sure that your pooch is obeying commands. If Spot is ignoring you when you tell him to sit, do not give up. Follow-through until you get the action that you expect. If you are going to give up without getting the action that you requested, don?t bother giving the command in the first place.

If your dog needs more stimulation (and most dogs do), but you have limited mobility or the weather is terrible, consider other ways of keeping your dog entertained by making him work for his meals. Use his kibble as rewards for performing tasks or commands. Alternatively, you can use a toy that the dog must get the food out of!

Be sure to reward good behavior when your dog acts like you want them to. If you take the time to teach them the important things for them to know and help them build their confidence that a good dog needs, you are sure to develop a strong and healthy relationship with them.

For dogs that chew inappropriately, try a training aid like a liquid that has a strong, bitter taste. Many pet stores sell holistic products that taste terrible to most dogs. Some people choose to steep pepper flakes in water in a spray bottle instead. Either way you choose to go, a bitter or spicy deterrent on furniture, shoes, or other items that you don?t want your dog chewing or eating can stop this behavior in its tracks.

Stop bad behavior before it starts by setting up your dog?s environment to discourage bad behavior. This may mean crate-training dogs that have issues with going to the bathroom outside, or limiting access to certain rooms for dogs with destructive tendencies. No matter what route you take, your dog will be safer if his environment is suited to his quirks.

Even if your dog is extremely unruly at the moment, do not despair. Most dogs can be trained with a proper technique and a little perseverance. Make use of the tips you just read to minimize the hardship involved in training your dog while maximizing the results at the same time.

Reddit is getting a fundraising button

5 hrs.

Being ?the front page of the Internet? comes with power, and Redditors have often, if not a bit spontaneously, channeled that power for fundraising.

Among their good deeds: giving a bullied senior citizen bus monitor a $700,000 vacation budget, scrounging up $31,000 overnight to help a three-year-old who needed a bone marrow transplant, and contributing more than $180,000 to Haiti earthquake relief efforts.

Now, for the first time, Reddit users will be able to execute some of these fundraisers within Reddit-branded pages.

Starting today, managers of the site's topic pages, or Subreddits, can opt to accept donations to specific nonprofits by installing new "Donate" buttons on their Subreddit pages. The TwoXChromosomes Subreddit, for instance, will add a button to support She's the First, an organization that supports girls' education in the developing world.

The buttons and the donation system they're attached to, Reddit Donate, were developed by payment startup Dwolla in partnership with another payment startup called Stripe. It will launch with 12 nonprofit partners, including Kiva, Charity: Water, and DonorsChoose.?

Many Subreddits are already active fundraisers. The atheism Subreddit, for instance, helped raise more than $200,000 for Doctors Without Boarders by directing traffic to a third-party fundraising page.

Without a Reddit tool for accepting donations, most fundraising Redditors have, like the athiest group, pointed each other to crowd funding sites such as Indiegogo, independent funding sites, and custom landing pages on charities' websites to contribute.

At times it can be unclear, however, where the money is actually going. Money raised for the bullied bus monitor's vacation, for instance, was collected on an Indiegogo page that was not set up in her name, but a Redditor's name. If a less scrupulous person had created the page, the story may have lost its happy ending.

?We want to protect our community, and for it to know that if it donates $100, that it's going to the right person and not to various fees,? Erik Martin, the general manager of Reddit, tells Fast Company.

Dwolla removes credit card numbers from transactions--and with them a handful of third-party financial-service providers?-and thus is able to charge an impressively low fee of $.25 for transactions more than $10 (transactions involving less than that are free). Money travels directly from donors' bank accounts to nonprofits' bank accounts. Stripe keeps the credit card in the process and charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction.?

Reddit has taken other steps to support charitable efforts initiated in its site, but none so significant.

Earlier this month, the site named Crowdtilt its official fundraising partner. A newly-launched startup, Crowdtilt enables anyone to raise money for any kind of project, and it promised Reddit to wave fees and verify that donated money ends up where it is intended.

It's difficult to verify how organizations that aren't registered nonprofits are spending their money, so the Dwolla and Stripe button only applies to nonprofit partners for now. That leaves out the individual-specific causes Reddit is famous for supporting.

Ben Milne, the CEO of Dwolla, tells Fast Company that if Redditors embrace it, there's likely room for the project to evolve. For now, the new feature formalizes a giving habit that has already become part of Reddit's reputation.

?It?s just like anyone could always raise money for their project," says Milne, "but it got way easier when Kickstarter launched.??

How to take awesome HDR photos with your iPhone

Have you ever wondered what that HDR toggle in your iPhone's camera options are? And why you want to use it? HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and refers to a scene that includes both bright and dark elements. When we talk about HDR photography, we are referring to taking photographs of such scenes. In this week's article we're going to discuss more details about HDR and how best use your iPhone's camera to get the most dynamically awesome photos ever.

What is HDR?

As mentioned above, HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and is not exclusive to photography. When you step outside on a sunny day and view a scene that has both really bright area and very dark, shaded areas, you are living in a setting with a great dynamic range -- a huge range of light intensity levels. On a foggy day, the dynamic range is very low (and usually ideal for photography).

By definition, photography is the art of recording light. This act must be done with the camera sensor -- which is only capable of capturing a certain range of light intensity at any given time. Even the most expensive and most professional cameras on the market on not equipped with sensors that can capture all ranges of light in one photograph. That's where "HDR photography" comes in.

HDR photography is traditionally done by taking multiple photos with the exact same composition but with different exposure settings, then merging them all together as one photo. For example, a photographer will set up his camera on a tripod, take one photo that is exposed for the darkest area of the scene, a second photo exoised for the mid-range section, and a third photo exposed for the brightest area of the scene. The photographer will then edit these photos in sophisticated software, such as Photoshop, and blend them together so that all the properly exposed areas of the three photos are merged together as a single photograph. A quick search for "HDR" on Flickr will provide a lot of great examples of the types of photographs that are created with this technique.

The iPhone uses a similar, though slightly less sophisticated, method of creating HDR images. When you enable HDR, the iPhone will take three photographs at the same time, with different exposures, and layer the best parts of each one to create one photo -- all in a matter of seconds. There are definitely noticeable improvements when using this feature, but it turns out that you can do more than just enable HDR to produce a better image.

How to enable HDR on your iPhone's camera

Enabling HDR on your iPhone's camera is very easy. With the Camera app open, you should see a button at the top of the screen that says Options. Tap this button to see the Grid and HDR toggles. To turn on HDR, switch to toggle to ON by tapping it. Tap Options again to get the menu to disappear. HDR will stay on until you repeat the process to turn it off.

Since the iPhone will take three photos every time you trigger the shutter, Apple has included an option in the Settings app that lets you keep the normal photos -- meaning the photos you would've taken if HDR was turned off. To turn this on, go to Settings > Photos & Camera > Keep Normal Photo > ON.

Tap to expose for darkest part of scene

Following the above instructions will have HDR up and running without any effort on your part. However, I've learned through much experimentation a little trick that will improve results -- exposing for the darkest part of the scene.

Everyone is familiar with the tap-to-focus feature of the iPhone's camera, but what many people don't realize is that not only is the camera focusing on your subject, but it's also exposing for this area of the photo as well. I don't have an explanation as to why, but exposing for the darkest part of the photo seems to produce better results than to let the iPhone choose an exposure automatically. The algorithm that the software uses appears to do a better job at recovering bright areas of a photo vs dark areas.

The sequence of photos shown above demonstrates this. The first photo was taken without HDR. The second photo was taken with HDR enabled and the exposure that the Camera chose automatically. For the third photo, I tapped on the left part of the screen where the grass is darkly shaded before taking the photo. It could be a matter of taste, but I prefer the last photo out of the three.

HDR apps

The built-in HDR feature of the iPhone's camera is a great, but there's no denying its limitations. That's where the App Store comes in. Diehard Ron Paul fans stalk Republican convention

Ron Paul supporters are pondering what next for the libertarian cause and complaining bitterly of betrayal by a party establishment about to crown Mitt Romney the Republican presidential nominee.

Paul lit a fuse under the libertarian wing of the Republican Party during the primary season, amassing the third largest number of delegates as he united legions of young supporters behind his anti-tax, anti-war message.

The surge in popularity for the movement has coincided with US weariness at expensive overseas wars and seething anger at the 2008 financial crisis that made fiscal discipline more appealing to voters.

Paul, a 77-year-old Texas congressman, retires in January, leaving the causes of personal liberty and small government without their most effective Washington champion just as they appear to be gaining traction.

"If it's not over it's not the end. As long as we have breath we can fight for freedom and liberty," self-proclaimed Minister of Truth, Derrick Grayson, told Paul supporters before launching into his music gig.

But despite vows to keep up the struggle, many at the three-day Paul event at the Florida State Fairgrounds expressed concern for the future without their charismatic figurehead and wondered who, if anyone, might replace him.

"The whole movement is waiting for the answer to that question," 40-year-old Tampa resident Mike Franklin told AFP, a massive .50 caliber bullet dangling from his neck.

"I just feel if Ron Paul isn't our president, everyone is just going to break up and just be controlled by whoever's in charge," said his wife Janae.

A pair of golden flip-flops with pictures of Romney glued to them -- "That's what he is, a flip-flopper" -- hung accusingly from her belt.

Her "if" belied the hope diehard Paul supporters clung to that some kind of miracle could still see him contest for the nomination on the floor of the convention, which runs Monday through Thursday in Tampa, Florida.

"Regardless of you media people, my brother could be nominated on the floor of the Republican Party if there are six states willing to stick their neck out, telling the Republican hierarchy to take a long walk off a short pier," insisted Ron Paul's younger brother Wayne.

"They've absolutely tried to crush the movement in every way shape and form," he told AFP, voicing the suspicions of many that the Republican National Convention is seeking to shut the veteran Texas congressman out.

Paul is set to hold a valedictory rally at the University of South Florida on Sunday but will not address the convention.

Romney will be formally anointed as President Barack Obama's Republican challenger in the November 6 election on Thursday after days of raucous speeches by party grandees and rising stars.

Anxious not to let Paul derail proceedings, the RNC is showing a tribute video on Tuesday night and scheduled his son Rand to address the gathering on Monday -- although that speech is now in doubt as Tropical Storm Isaac forced the cancelation of first day events.

Elected as a Kentucky senator in 2010 as part of the Tea Party surge, Rand Paul describes himself as a constitutional conservative and a libertarian and would be the most logical person to take up the baton from his father.

But according to Janae Franklin, he has alienated many in the movement. "After Rand endorsed Mitt Romney most of the party lost interest in him," she said.

Paul supporters have nothing but scorn for Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and multimillionaire businessman who they say shares none of their beliefs.

Describing his nomination as a "scam," Mike Franklin said it was "stupid to expect that this jackass is going to beat Obama."

He saw more similarities than differences between the presidential rivals.

"They are both backed by the big banks, both backed by Goldman Sachs, both candidates went to Harvard."

"The only difference is that with Romney it might take a year more than it will take our current president to put this economy in the toilet," said Wayne Paul, before offering a glimmer of hope to libertarians.

"My brother will retire as a congressman in January, but he is not going to retire from talking about the message of freedom and liberty. He won't ever quit that, it's too engrained in him."

As Grayson launched into a version of Tom Petty's "I won't back down" with the name Paul entered in fitting places, supporters at the adjoining hall perused Paul memorabilia, from T-shirts and balloons to DVDs and shot glasses.

One stall sold playing cards with queens and jacks replaced by ladies and gentlemen, and kings by patriots.

Melina Brajovic, a Pittsburgh resident of Serbian origin, wore a patriot costume complete with triangular hat and velvet cloak.

"I know that liberty is attractive, the truth is attractive. I don't think it will ever end," she said.

Boys Do Cry: How To Deal With a Breakup Like a Man | Hugo ...

I originally co-wrote this for Scarleteen in 2009, and appears here with permission of both that site and the co-author. It was written for teen boys struggling with painful break-ups.

Breaking up; getting dumped; dumping someone ? chances are, this has happened to most people you know.

The first romantic relationships we have rarely survive a lifetime. Some teens and twentysomethings do genuinely expect their ?first loves? to last forever, while others are more realistic, hoping only that a relationship will last until some mutually agreeable moment in the future. And when the break-ups do happen, as they almost inevitably will, they are rarely painless. Guys in particular are often surprised by how badly the end of a relationship can hurt, and are particularly vulnerable to feeling isolated, lonely, and without anyone to turn to to process through that pain.

It?s important not to over-generalize. At the same time, it?s vital to note that we live in a society that prohibits men, especially young men, from acknowledging their emotional pain. The ?boys don?t cry? ethos is a powerful one in almost every corner of American culture, and the damage it does is very real. Just as little boys on the playground often are taught that they must toughen up and ignore the bumps and scrapes that their bodies suffer, teenage guys pick up the message from their male peers that a break-up ought to be more cause for relief than pain. ?Dude, you?re a free man!? is how well-meaning friends may respond; the myth that women eagerly seek out commitment while men just as eagerly seek to avoid it is just that, a myth, but many guys feel as if they should be less torn up than they really are.

Though not all young women feel as if they have permission to grieve after a relationship is over, most do. Television shows and movies which depict teenage breakups often show young women with strong emotional reactions; in particular, the media makes it clear that women have permission to talk about their feelings, and can expect sympathy and understanding from peers and family. Of course, not every young woman has friends with whom to process through that pain ? but many do. Our cultural expectation that women can and will talk at length about their emotions, and seek advice and sympathy from friends, gives young women the sense that it?s okay to reach out for the help that they need.

Guys are often told to suppress their feelings through denial, or by trying to go out and hook up with someone new as soon as possible. They are also much less likely to see media images of young men acknowledging grief and reaching out for help and reassurance. In the movies, male tears at the end of relationships? if they appear at all ? are often played for laughs or for ridicule. And though some young men do learn that it?s ?okay? to cry in private, or to cry in front of a girlfriend, it is a rare young man in our culture who feels as if he can shed tears in front of his male buddies or partners without judgment. (It?s always a good conversation starter with boys: ask how they would react if their best male friend cried in front of them while asking for help. Even in this enlightened era, far too many guys are totally ?at wits end? when confronted by a male friend?s evident emotional pain.) Though there is some anecdotal evidence that this is starting to change, far too few guys have the sense that their pain will be validated if they share it with their friends.

One result of this lack of access to a strong support system is that many guys, when they get into romantic relationships, become heavily, even exclusively emotionally reliant on their girlfriends. Many young women are regularly struck by how many young men will show strong, honest, raw emotion with them in private. More than a few young women have had boyfriends who broke down in front of them and said ?I never told anyone this? as they opened up a raw and real source of pain. While that openness is usually reciprocated, in our culture it is much more likely that a young woman will have other emotional resources (friends of either sex, family) to whom she can turn. To put it another way, all too often her boyfriend is her best friend while she is his only close friend, at least the only one with whom he can cry and be completely vulnerable. And that means that when the break-up happens, the guy may be far more likely to be without anyone to whom to turn.

It often seems, as a result, that it takes young men longer to get over a breakup than it does young women.

Most of us have seen something like this unfold in opposite-sex relationships: guy and girl break up. Girl initially seems far more devastated. She talks to her friends, mourns publicly, seems genuinely distraught. Guy seems, by comparison, to hardly be in pain at all. Weeks go by, then months. Because she?s dealt with the hurt immediately, girlfriend is getting over things, moving on, ready for what comes next. Boyfriend, meanwhile, has fallen into a delayed depression. He may suddenly start calling, frantic to get her back, having suddenly realized breaking up was a ?huge mistake.? He may even progress to what seems like stalking, begging and pleading for ?another try.? And while that might have worked on girlfriend six days after the break up, it comes far too late when it comes, as it not infrequently does, six months down the line! This delayed reaction is an obvious consequence of the fact that so many young men lack strong emotional support networks (other, perhaps, than that provided by the women whom they are involved with romantically or sexually) and are far more likely to adopt distraction or denial as initial coping strategies.

If you?re gay, you may find you?re given a little more permission to be emotional with a breakup, or you may find that doesn?t make any difference at all. Sometimes being gay means being even more isolated (especially if you aren?t out yet), or feeling like you have to be even more careful not to step outside the mold of masculinity you?re held to, since you may feel or be told you?re already less masculine by virtue of being queer. Heterosexuality is often considered an essential part of being a ?real? man, even though that?s a bunch of hooey. Having love relationships end when you?re young is also tough enough as it is, but if your breakup was also one of your first same-sex relationships, it can be even harder.

Newsflash, peeps: boys do cry. Men do get sad. Breakups hurt everyone, even if each sex has very different culturally-mandated rules about how to respond. So the next time you run into a male friend who seems remarkably calm and blas? in the immediate aftermath of ending a relationship, ask a few questions. Don?t expect instant tears. But do, gently, send the message that it?s okay to hurt and to make that hurt known.

10 Ways to Get Through a Breakup Without Breaking

1) While moving on is important in time, letting yourself really feel all you?re feeling now is just as important. As we?ve said, guys can often feel pressures to be more stiff-upper-lippy than girls, or to pretend like a breakup doesn?t bother you. But most people, of all genders, even when a breakup is wanted, have feelings of sadness, anger or disappointment about a breakup. It?s up to you who you share your feelings with, but make sure you?re at list giving yourself time and space alone to just experience those feelings and let them have their own flow.

2) Express yourself. Expressing how we feel is part of dealing with how we feel and moving forward. Any of us can use creative ways to express our feelings, such as through journaling, a creative art like photography or music,

3) Plenty of us, after a breakup, may pine or obsess over a lost partner with photographs or mementos of the relationship. But at a certain point ? depending on how you?re doing, and if you feel like those things are doing you good or not ? it?s time to put that stuff away. You don?t have to ritually destroy them (and may regret it later if you do), but putting them all in a box, and then somewhere well out of sight, can help a lot.

4) Reclaim the things you love and had less time for. Obviously, the more relationships we have, the less time we usually have for ourselves, and intimate relationships can take up a lot of time and energy. Doing the things we love and have previously had less time for helps heal our hearts and also remind us of who we are, by ourselves, not just who we are in a relationship.

5) Find some solid support. For sure, not all of your friends may have the emotional maturity or life experience to understand how you?re feeling. Some may even be really bad choices to share with: a person who teases you about being sad, or who just disses your ex endlessly isn?t likely to be a good support. But do reach out to people you think may be supportive. That might be a teacher or a coach, one of your parents or a sibling, or a friend of any gender. If you?re having a supremely tough time with a breakup, finding a counselor to help you through it can also be a good step, whether that?s the counselor at school or a counseling professional through your healthcare services. And if you feel like you?ve got none of these resources, you can seek out some safe spaces online to be real with how you feel, like our message boards.

6) Deal with your breakup in ways which are emotionally healthy for you and your ex. It?s common to feel angry or bitter after a breakup, but some people act on those feelings in ways that aren?t healthy, and which range from masochistic to downright dangerous. To be clear, ceasing to do all the things you enjoy doing, or which you need to do ? going to school or work, eating, sleeping, bathing ? is not healthy. Self-harm through things like cutting, drinking or doing drugs, high-risk sexual behavior or suicide attempts are not healthy. Refusing to give your ex space and time ? such as by texting or emailing them over and over again ? or allowing an ex to refuse to give you space and time is not healthy. Hopefully it?s obvious, but blackmailing, manipulating, stalking, harassing, or physically or sexually attacking an ex in any way are not only unhealthy, but abusive and criminal.

7) If you and/or an ex want to try and sustain a platonic friendship, be sure you both are giving yourself some space and time first, and also set and maintain healthy boundaries. As well, check in with your or their motivations for a friendship: often enough, some people want to ?stay friends? not to actually be friends, but because they are either having a tough time letting go, or because they hope a friendship may help get the romantic relationship back. The same goes double for breaking up, then walking right back into a friends-with-benefits scenario. If neither person has had time to deal with the breakup, you can be very sure that someone is going to get hurt and feel very confused by casual sex ? though sex with a recent ex is hardly casual ? when a relationship is supposed to be over.

8) Try and avoid rebounding by giving yourself time to be single after a relationship. Sure, now and then we rebound anyway, or a new relationship just happens. Sometimes, a new relationship may even be why the old one ended. But most of us need some time to grieve and reflect after a breakup: if we don?t have time to feel our feelings, as well as time to learn the lessons of our last relationships and the breakup, our next one might not be any better than the last. Too, after a breakup, we so often feel so lonely, having been used to having a partner, that relationship choices made hot on the heels of a breakup don?t tend to be our best.

9) Remember that a breakup is not likely about how much you suck, or how unwanted or undesirable you are. When relationships don?t work, it?s rarely about one person, which shouldn?t be surprising since relationships are necessarily about more than one person. Rather, relationships that end, fall apart or just don?t work tend to be about how any two people find that their personalities, lifestyles, goals, communication styles, and any number or kind of needs and wants don?t mesh or play nicely together. As well, breakups are even more common or frequent with younger people than with older folks because younger people are still growing and changing so much that a partnership that feels perfect one month can feel like a poor fit the next. Even the most awesome people in the world cannot have a great love relationship with just anyone: we can be as great as we want to be, but that doesn?t mean we?ll be great together with everyone. It?s helpful to try not to look at breakups as failures, even though it can sure feel that way. Moving on or away from something that isn?t working for one or both people isn?t a failure, it?s a movement towards both learning and finding what does work for them.

10) ? and when it?s time, be open to other relationships again. It can be so easy, especially when a relationship is over, to only remember the good stuff or for our good times to seem even better than they actually were. If you?re getting over one of our first loves, it might feel like you?ll never have those feelings again, or never have them so hugely. You might also feel scared to try getting involved intimately again. All of those feelings are normal, but chances are, you will likely have those feelings again, and while we always risk hurt or heartbreak when we get close to others, those are the risks we take to have the good stuff. A broken heart can hurt like hell, to be sure, but broken hearts do heal in time.

88% Robot & Frank

All Critics (58) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (51) | Rotten (7)

It may not seem like an even playing field pitting an actor as powerfully intense as Frank Langella opposite a robot, but that's the game plan behind the waywardly endearing, slightly futuristic fantasy Robot & Frank.

Much of Robot & Frank is (frankly) resistible, including the climactic narrative twist, but there is also a likeable oddness that transcends the sentimental contrivance.

An endearing movie about a human and his mechanical new buddy.

Just about the time that Robot starts to grow on his curmudgeonly client, so may this movie -- a sci-fi fantasia that's surprisingly sweet and old-fashioned -- win over any skeptics.

Turns out to be a hard, funny and realistic movie about the future.

Charming, playful and sly, it makes us believe that a serene automaton and a snappish human being can be best friends forever.

Amusing and ingratiating, leaving a bittersweet afterglow

Smart and sweet, Robot and Frank feels familiar while you're watching it yet consistently finds ways to catch you off-guard.

Further proof that sci-fi need not be high-budget spectacle, and can actually do a good little job exploring the human condition, our characters, and our memories.

Frank Langella's presence would be enough to pique my interest in any film. Robot & Frank offers him a modest starring vehicle with a science-fiction spin, and the result is one of the most enjoyable indie films of the year.

Blessed with artistry bordering on magic, Langella carries the film.

Robot & Frank settles for what it is, a short, slight story, sweetly told and gently and believably acted.

A bittersweet, quietly hilarious buddy caper that deserves to be the sleeper hit of the summer.

Cold-staring with a black, reflective visor, a robot helps a fading old man to see life, and himself, more clearly.

In a traditionally excellent, subtle performance, Langella embodies a man recapturing his purpose.

Unique Developing Tips For Your Bungalow ... - Home Improvement

The cottage by the seaside is one of the most calming and peaceful areas you can get. Bathroom in the cottage seaside house should tell you of the seaside you are in and a shower should experience exotic and look like a developer bathroom. Many styles create your shower position experience like an expansion of the seaside. Here are a few that you can easily do on your own.

The ground is the first position you should consider. As much as you want to position your entire designing abilities into action, remember to stay efficient as well. The seaside is loaded with sand, so your ground should be sand suitable. The best styles for this are using wooden panelling or floor tiles. The wooden makes the position have that exotic traditional look. Decide on a mild color for the wooden and make sure the sections are fixed well with little space to prevent sand getting trapped.

If you opt for floor tiles, choose bathroom styles that go with the rock in the location. You can take a awesome stroll by the seaside to sketch your motivation. Find the durable look of most rocks and the lightness in color. Keep the grout color mild as well. Light colors create a space look larger and the cottage shower is not as huge as one back at home.

Next in line are the surfaces and similar to the flooring surfaces, choose mild colors for the walls. Since the earth has the experience of seaside rocks, you can opt to give the surfaces the look of the sea. Light oceanic or sundown colors works well. If you are willing to get more in the surfaces, you can have them fixed with pill panel sections or even a variety of rocks and stream cup set in concrete.
After the surfaces, concentrate on the countertops that should have easy styles as well. Instead of the decorative, choose soapstone or a easy floor tile style for them. You want the space to be shiny, so white drains works completely.

Finally, decorate the space with items that tell one of the seashores. You can choose styles of lighthouses, different kinds of seafood, vessels and other seaside components. Generate the components into the style by having for example, one walls designed to reflection a preferred seafood or vessel style. For those on a less funds, have small items placed on the covers or installed on the surfaces.

You can decide to go gathering seashells, cup, and rock each time you go out to the seaside, complete them in a cup container, and add colored water. Making your own components tie each selection to a storage.

San Jose, CA - Samsung Ordered To Pay Apple $1.05 Billion In ...

San Jose, CA - After a year of scorched-earth litigation, a jury decided Friday that Samsung ripped off the innovative technology used by Apple to create its revolutionary iPhone and iPad.

The jury ordered Samsung to pay Apple $1.05 billion in the latest skirmish of a global legal battle between the two tech giants. An appeal is expected.

Apple Inc. filed its patent infringement lawsuit in April 2011 and engaged legions of the country?s highest-paid patent lawyers to demand $2.5 billion from its top smartphone competitor. Samsung Electronics Co. fired back with its own lawsuit seeking $399 million.

The verdict, however, belonged exclusively to Apple, as the jury rejected all Samsung?s claims against Apple. Jurors also decided against some of Apple?s claims involving the two dozen Samsung devices at issue, declining to award the full $2.5 billion Apple demanded.

However, the jury found that several Samsung products illegally used such Apple creations as the ?bounce-back? feature when a user scrolls to an end image, and the ability to zoom text with a tap of a finger.

Apple lawyer plans to formally demand Samsung pull its most popular cellphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market. They also can ask the judge to triple the damages to $3 billion. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh will decide those issues along with Samsung?s demand she overturn the jury?s verdict in several weeks.

The outcome of the case is likely to have ripple effects in the smartphone market. After seeing Samsung?s legal defeat, other device makers relying on Android may become more reluctant to use the software and risk getting dragged into court.

?Some of these device makers might end up saying, ?We love Android, but we really don?t want to fight with Apple anymore,? said Christopher Marlett, CEO of MDB Capital Group, an investment bank specializing in intellectual property.

ISI Group analyst also viewed the verdict as a blow to Android, as much as Samsung.

During closing arguments at the trial, Apple attorney Harold McElhinny claimed Samsung was having a ?crisis of design? after the 2007 launch of the iPhone, and executives with the South Korean company were determined to illegally cash in on the success of the revolutionary device.

Samsung?s lawyers countered that it was legally giving consumers what they want: smartphones with big screens. They said Samsung didn?t violate any of Apple?s patents and further alleged innovations claimed by Apple were actually created by other companies.

Samsung, headquartered in Seoul, responded to the verdict, saying in a statement it was ?unfortunate that patent law can be manipulated to give one company a monopoly over rectangles with rounded corners.?

?Today?s verdict should not be viewed as a win for Apple, but as a loss for the American consumer. It will lead to fewer choices, less innovation, and potentially higher prices,? Samsung said.

The jurors? determination that Samsung took Apple?s ideas probably matters more to the companies than the damages figures, Marlett said.

?I don?t know if $1 billion is hugely significant to Apple or Samsung,? Marlett said. ?But there is a social cost here. As a company, you don?t want to be known as someone who steals from someone else. I am sure Samsung wants to be known as an innovator, especially since a lot of Asian companies have become known for copying the designs of innovators.?

Samsung has emerged as one of Apple?s biggest rivals and has overtaken as the leading smartphone maker. Samsung?s Galaxy line of phones run on Android, a mobile operating system that Google Inc. has given out for free to Samsung and other phone makers.

Google entered the smartphone market while its then-CEO Eric Schmidt was on Apple?s board, infuriating Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who considered Android to be a blatant rip off of the iPhone?s innovations.

After shoving Schmidt off Apple?s board, Jobs vowed that Apple would resort to ?thermonuclear war? to destroy Android and its allies.

If Android lose any ground in the mobile computing market, that would hurt Google, too. That?s because Google relies on Android to drive mobile traffic to its search engine and services to sell more advertising.

The Apple-Samsung trial came after each side filed a blizzard of legal motions and refused advisories by the judge to settle the dispute out of court. Deliberations by the jury of seven men and two women began Wednesday.

Jurors left the courthouse without addressing the scrum of international media who camped out at the San Jose courthouse for a month.

They notified the judge at about 2:30 p.m. that they had arrived at a verdict after deliberating two-and-a-half days. Many expected deliberations to last longer because of the complexity of the case.

Jurors filed into the courtroom silently Friday, the youngest juror who favored flipflops, shorts and playing videogames was wearing a Beatles sweatshirt and handed over the 20-page verdict form with little fanfare.

Apple and Samsung combined account for more than half of global smartphone sales. Samsung has sold 22.7 million smartphones and tablets that Apple claimed uses its technology. McElhinny said those devices accounted for $8.16 billion in sales since June 2010.

From the beginning, legal experts and Wall Street analysts viewed Samsung as the underdog. Apple?s headquarters is a mere 10 miles from the San Jose courthouse, and jurors were picked from the heart of Silicon Valley where Jobs is a revered technological pioneer.

While the legal and technological issues were complex, patent expert Alexander I. Poltorak previously said the case would likely boil down to whether jurors believed Samsung?s products look and feel almost identical to Apple?s iPhone and iPad.

To overcome that challenge at trial, Samsung?s lawyers argued that many of Apple?s claims of innovation were either obvious concepts or ideas stolen from Sony Corp. and others. Experts called that line of argument a high-risk strategy because of Apple?s reputation as an innovator.

Apple?s lawyers argued there is almost no difference between Samsung products and those of Apple, and presented internal Samsung documents they said showed it copied Apple designs. Samsung lawyers insisted that several other companies and inventors had previously developed much of the Apple technology at issue.

Apple and Samsung have filed similar lawsuits in eight other countries, including South Korea, Germany, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, Britain, France and Australia.

?This is not the final word in this case or in battles being waged in courts and tribunals around the world, some of which have already rejected many of Apple?s claims,? Samsung said in its statement.

Samsung won a home court ruling earlier Friday in the global patent battle against Apple. Judges in Seoul said Samsung didn?t copy the look and feel of the iPhone and ruled that Apple infringed on Samsung?s wireless technology.

However, the judges also said Samsung violated Apple?s technology behind the feature that causes a screen to bounce back when a user scrolls to an end image. Both sides were ordered to pay limited damages.

The Seoul ruling was a rare victory for Samsung in its arguments that Apple has infringed on its wireless technology patents. Samsung?s claims have previously been shot down by courts in Europe, where judges have ruled that Samsung patents were part of industry standards that must be licensed under fair terms to competitors.

The U.S. case is one of some 50 lawsuits among myriad telecommunications companies jockeying for position in the burgeoning $219 billion market for computer tablets and smartphones.
