AIR.U Bringing 'Super Wi-Fi' to Rural College Campuses

Super Wi-Fi is going to college, bringing broadband access to underserved campuses and their surrounding communities.

AIR.U (Advanced Internet Regions), a group comprised of a higher education associations, public interest groups, and high-tech companies, announced on Tuesday that it will deploy Super Wi-Fi networks to universities to expand high-speed wireless connectivity on and off campus. The "super" technology relies on TV white spaces, or unused television channels, to provide Internet access.

AIR.U said in a statement that it will focus on upgrading broadband in those areas that have greater-than-average demand for Web access, but less-than-average access.

Michael Calabrese, director of the Wireless Future Project at the New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute, said that the lack of sufficient broadband and a typically large number of vacant TV channels make colleges in rural areas "ideal candidates" to receive Super Wi-Fi capabilities.

The group's initial goal is to deploy pilot programs and "create a roadmap for the rapid deployment of sustainable, net generation wireless networks," as white spaces equipment is expected to become more widely available next year.

Super Wi-Fi networks will transmit on lower frequencies than regular Wi-Fi, allowing broadband signals to cover larger areas, the group said.

"Expanded broadband access has been an unaffordable hurdle in rural, underserved communities," said Robert Rucker, vice president for Operations and Technology at the United Negro College Fund, one off the AIR.U partners.

"This effort will enable selected institutions and all the constituents they serve to have the enhanced, sustainable capacity needed to more fully experience the information age and the ability to participate and contribute to it," Rucker said in a statement.

In December, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the first commercial Super Wi-Fi devices, as well as the geolocation database that will ensure white space devices operate only on vacant TV channels without interfering with television reception.

Google and a number of tech companies were selected last year by the FCC as administrators of the Super Wi-Fi databases. The eight other organizations include Comsearch, Frequency Finder, KB Enterprises and LS Telecom, Key Bridge Global, Neustar, Spectrum Bridge, Telcordia, and WSdb.

AIR.U expects one or more pilot networks to be operational by the first quarter of 2013.

Google Chrome for iPhone, iPad now available

Google has surprised everyone by making the Chrome web browser available for the iOS based devices through Apple App Store. Now Google Chrome also joins the race of the third party web browser in the Apple App Store and brings new user experience.

The availability of the Google Chrome web browser for iPhone and iPad was announced at the on-going Google I/O conference in San Francisco, US.

Google Chrome web browser now arrives for its rival platform - iOS. Available for the iOS 4.3 or higher running devices, the Google Chrome is not exactly like the one available for the Android platform.

The Chrome for iOS uses Apple's older engine UIWebView for rendering and as JavaScript engine. In plain words, it will be even slower than the Apple's own mobile Safari which uses a Nitro JavaScript engine for rendering.

That reason for using Apple's UIWebView engine is because that is what Apple offers the third party web browser to use - be it Opera, Dolphin or Yahoo Axis.

Chrome for iOS includes its regular set of fancy features such as ability to view open tabs and pages from other devices. That requires signing into Chrome using your Google Account credentials. The famous Cognito Mode is also available for the Chrome for iOS.

Google aimed to deliver a fast, secure and stable version of web browsing experience to the iOS platform users. Though, not as fast as for Android but you can certainly enjoy the similar user interface on the iPhone or iPad.

The new Chrome for iOS is quite userful for the ardent lovers of Chrome browser for the desktops to sync their bookmarks, pages and calender with the iOS devices and access it on the go.

Recently, Mozilla showed the prototype of its upcoming Firefox web browser for the iPad and codenamed it as Junior. No release dates were promised for that mobile web browser.

Google Chrome for iOS can be downloaded from the Apple App store.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The ride begins with two train cars, filled with as many as 24 passengers, cautiously trekking up a hill of wooden tracks. The rattle of the ascent slowly grows louder. As the cars reach the coaster's 85-foot peak, there's a short pause ? followed by a swift 60-mph plunge to the bottom that has made stomachs churn and eyes water since Calvin Coolidge was in the White House.

Such a timeworn ride requires a great deal of attention to ensure the safety of its passengers, say workers responsible for the Cyclone, the 85-year-old New York City landmark and international amusement icon that will be feted Saturday with a birthday party including 25-cent rides ? the same price they were on its debut on June 26, 1927.

"It takes a lot of work to run a very old roller coaster," said Valerio Ferrari, president of Central Amusement International, which operates the coaster.

Each morning beginning at 7, maintenance workers hike the coaster's tracks along the walk boards in search of damaged wood and loose bolts. The cars, which are originals from 1927, are dismantled every winter before they undergo nondestructive testing and are reassembled.

The Cyclone may not be the oldest or tallest coaster in the nation. But it became a worldwide symbol of America's emerging leisure class in the early 20th century.

Towering above Coney Island's boisterous boardwalk at the corner of Surf Avenue and West 10th Street in Brooklyn, the Cyclone went up after brothers Jack and Irving Rosenthal invested $175,000 to build a dynamic new coaster that would satisfy the demand for more attractions in the area.

The result was a ride that included 2,640 feet of track, 12 drops and 27 elevation changes. For a minute and 50 seconds, passengers aboard the Cyclone were jerked from one edge of their seat to the other, as the coaster would slow around the bends before heaving its riders down steep dips.

This was all done by design, said Jennifer Tortorici, the Cyclone's operations manager.

"It's 2,640 feet of track, so if it wasn't slow in certain areas, the cars would wind up on the beach somewhere," she said.

Still, the turbulence is sometimes so forceful that passengers have seen personal belongings fly out of their pockets. Lost items range from the typical ? keys, wallets and cellphones ? to the more obscure, like dentures, wigs and underwear, Tortorici said.

Safety issues have at times dogged the Cyclone. A worker died on the ride in 1985, Tortorici said, and in 2008 the family of a California man who died after fracturing his neck on the ride sued the city for failing to keep the coaster safe. A Law Department spokeswoman said the city has been indemnified and the case is pending.

The city's Buildings Department conducts safety inspections up to three times a season, according to spokeswoman Ryan FitzGibbon.

Beyond its age, what distinguishes the Cyclone from contemporary steel coasters is that it's made of wood, from the cars to the tracks they ride on, although it rests on a steel base. Valerio Ferrari, president of Central Amusement International, which operates the coaster, said this construction makes for a ride that has "a lot of energy."

"Wood has that feeling, that vibration. It's more alive," Ferrari said.

He added: "Going for one ride on this coaster is like going through, someone said, a car accident."

The sentiment has been shared throughout the years. The coaster's employees have no qualms about perpetuating a legend that in 1948, Emilio Franco, a West Virginia coal miner who had been mute since birth, spoke his first words ? "I feel sick" ? after plummeting down the Cyclone's precipitous 60-degree drop.

Even Charles Lindbergh, the American aviator who became the first person to fly a nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean, reportedly said several years after it opened that riding the Cyclone was "greater than flying an airplane at top speed," according to The New York Times.

These days, the Cyclone's paint has chipped, and the steel beams have rusted a bit. But patrons still enjoy the same rush.

"You can describe it in just one word: intense," said Laurie Rosen, of Burke, Va., who rode it Tuesday.

The Cyclone, also known as the Big Momma of Coney Island, carries about 250,000 riders every season from April through October.

By 1988, the city declared the coaster an official landmark, and it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

According to the Parks Department, the Gravesend Historical Society's president wrote in a letter requesting the landmark status: "Unlike the Dodgers, the Cyclone will never leave Brooklyn."

A will can?t help you and your family when you?re alive. If an accident or a stroke leaves you mentally incapacitated and you don?t have a Durable Power of Attorney for Property in place, there is no one to automatically step in and manage your financial affairs. A marriage license does not give your spouse authority to act for you if you become incapacitated. It?s false comfort to believe that it does. All your financial assets including bank accounts can become frozen. Your spouse may be unable to sell the house if she needs to. The courts will appoint someone to represent your best interests. You have sentenced your family to an ongoing financial nightmare.

If you haven?t taken the responsibility to legally make your wishes known you may be kept alive and in pain as medical bills devour your estate because a family member is unable to let you go. We believe it will be cumbersome, time-consuming, and in most cases, very expensive.

Do Long Distance Relationships Work? - Evolve Her

Whenever you hear about long distance relationships your first initial thought is that they will not work.? I am someone who has always thought this, and probably when I was younger I couldn?t have made a long distance relationship work.

I like to think that since I have grown up a little and experienced a lot, I have developed in mature thinking.

I have been with my boyfriend for 4 years now and for 2 of those years he has lived in another state.? It takes me a 5 hour plane ride and then an hour drive to see him each time.

I believe to make a long distance relationship work it requires the same principals as any other relationship, but with some enhancements.

The most important thing in my book is trust.? I have to trust that he is 100% committed to the relationship as much as I am.? So how can I trust him?

Well I believe that in every relationship it is important to give 100%. This is the biggest thing I hear from people, they just don?t feel you can fully trust anyone that lives in another state.

I disagree, trust is something that is necessary for me, and I have faith in him, if he proves me wrong, it won?t be easy, but I want to have full trust and not have a constant worry that he is being faithful.

I would rather love and lose, then to never have loved before. I never want to sit home and wait for a person and watch my life pass me by, and I would never expect him to do that.

When he is gone I want him to go out, make friends, and enjoy life, and I truly want him to be happy no matter where he is living. I think that it is really important to not try and be like everyone else, and don?t judge other people. I believe you should stay true to yourself.

We have also made it a priority to work on seeing each other once a month.? Now this is difficult with both of us having crazy schedules and for the cost of travel, but we still try to do it every month.

We also Face Time a couple times a week. It is great talking to him on the phone, but with Face time, I love seeing his face.? As in any relationship, communication is essential, we are honest and open with each other.

Being apart so much makes our time together momentous. When he is gone it makes me appreciate the little things that he does to help me out.??? Every time we get to see each other it is always exciting.

On the flipside, I keep thinking that one day I will get used to seeing him leave but I will tell you as of yet it has not gotten any easier.? I always feel that each time gets harder to let go.? I have to focus on appreciating the time we get to spend together and how much I enjoying being with him.

I am definitely not an expert on long distance relationships; we still have fights like every other couple, and we work hard to have better communication and solve any issues that do come up.

I am grateful for everything this relationship is and how it will grow in the future. As for your long distance relationships, I say take your life and relationship and do what makes sense for you.

NEW YORK (AP) ? After selling a comedy special directly to fans and upending the comedy business, Louis C.K. is taking the same approach with tickets to his next tour.

The comedian announced Monday evening that he'll charge a flat, no-fee rate of $45 to all of the shows on a 39-city tour he kicks off in October. Tickets will bypass ticketing services and are available only through louisck.com.

That's similar to how he sold downloads of his special "Live at the Beacon" for $5, a move that was widely hailed and has since been imitated by other comics like Jim Gaffigan and Aziz Ansari. It made more than $1 million in 12 days.

"I'm trying something new, building on the fun, success and fan-benefit of selling my content online," the comedian, whose FX show "Louie" debuts its third season Thursday, said in an email to fans.

In an effort to deter scalping, he pledged that any tickets sold above the original price will be canceled. True-market value for a show by Louis C.K., one of the most popular stand-ups in the country, would fetch higher prices. (Online ticketing company Etix is assisting the comedian's sale.)

Often, booking venues without the inclusion of a large ticketing service can prove problematic for acts looking to avoid Ticketmaster, which merged with concert producer LiveNation in 2010. Louis C.K. said booking venues had been "a real challenge."

"About a year ago I reached a place where I realized I am making enough money doing comedy so the next thing that interested me is bringing your price down," he told fans. "Either way, I still make a whole lot more than my grandfather who taught math and raised chickens in Michigan."

Row House 14: Home Brew

No secret here that we tend to be beer snobs. Well, actually, we tend to be food, coffee, music, chocolate, and beer snobs. We just have such a hard time drinking beer that tastes like watered down something or other that's not even beer. Aside from the occasional Natty Boh (which is a Baltimore staple, so it's a fair excuse), you'll find us going for the more potent, flavorful, and artfully crafted varieties.

This past Christmas, Andrew's parents gave us a home brew kit. We had tried an English Bitter beer that they had given us a kit for and it turned out fairly well. However, it was a beer that you'd rather drink with food rather than have as a refreshing beverage on a hot Baltimore summer day. As our supply of the first beer dwindled, we decided to brew a second batch-- this time my favorite, an IPA. The process is a long one with a lot of waiting after actually brewing the beer, so at this point we're waiting on the final carbonation process that occurs after the beer has been bottled.

The process starts with a giant pot of very hot water, some grains in a bag, and finally the addition of malt and hops.

It ferments for almost a week after some yeast has been added, and looks something like this when it is ready to be bottled.
Super tasty looking, right? ;)

The next step is to add a priming sugar that starts the carbonation process and then siphon the beer into a new bucket in order to filter out all of that sludge. Finally, it is bottling time!

We've been thinking of a few names for this particular batch and then I'll be designing labels. We'll be waiting about one more week until the beer is ready to drink, so I'll try to update you all then.
