Bees who review resumes and interview... ? Weddingbee Boards

6.

NAvery ?? April 13, 2013?? Indiana

I hate looking at resumes, but I'd be happy to tell you what sets applicants apart when I'm interviewing and reviewing resumes. Now, not everyone will agree with my advice, and it definitely can be industry and company-size specific, but these are things that make people successful at my company. And I'll also recommend the book 48 Days to the Work You Love by Dan Miller. Kind of Jesusy (if you aren't into that kind of thing), but I was able to totally overlook it. And I was very skeptical when I read it, but dang - it worked. I went from a job that I hated to a career & company that I've been with for 6.5 years and have nearly tripled my income with.

Here's what sets people apart when I'm hiring - I'm in marketing for a business-to-business sales team. We're a publicly traded company with about 600 employees.

- Someone who goes above and beyond. Just submitting a resume online is *yawn*. Some organizations may hate it, but any candidate who sends an "application packet" with their resume, a TAILORED cover letter, work samples, nice packaging, etc - automatically is getting an interview. One of my more recent hires had submitted an application online but never heard back from HR so found my name by searching online and emailed me to very nicely ask if there was anyone she could talk to to find out more. I liked the initiative. Being resourceful and taking initiative will serve you well.

- Cover letters are way more interesting than resumes. Make the cover letter about the COMPANY you are applying to, not about yourself. Read news articles about things the company is dealing with and mention them in your letter. Even if you're totally off on the division you are applying to (like you talk about a regulation challenge they are facing but it ends up you were actually applying for a HR position), it doesn't really matter. It shows you care about the company and aren't just sending out mass letters. It also shows you can write.

- Include measureable numbers in your resume and highlights of your accomplishments. Don't just state your duties in past roles, state what you actually accomplished. Bullet point it and keep it brief. One page. Resumes are the worst.

- I'd suggest including one reference LETTER in your resume packet with a listing of one or two other people they can contact by email/phone. A letter of the reference is much more compelling because people are unlikey to call references until they get through the interview. But if there's a letter, I'll read it and it will likely set you apart in my mind.

- Send a thank you note if you get an interview. Email is okay but hand-written is best. If you're worried about it not getting there in time, send one via email and a follow up one hand-written. It doesn't have to be long-winded but it does make people stand out.

- This is SO duh, but be on time but NOT MORE THAN 10 MINUTES EARLY for interviews. I have had people show up up to 50 minutes early. That is a huge imposition on someone's day and schedule. Get to the location early but don't go in until 10 minutes before (unless they have told you there is a security process - this is a question to ask when setting the interview time).

- At every step in the process, drive home your desire to listen, learn more about what the company needs from this role, and how you can accomplish that job and then figure out how to do even more than they knew they needed. Don't talk about why you want the job and what it would do for you and what's so cool to you about the job. Talk about what THEY need and their "job to be done."

Hope all of that triggers some ideas.

Polar lake's clue to alien life

The discovery of microbes thriving in the salty, sub-zero conditions of an Antarctic lake could raise the prospects for life on the Solar System's icy moons.

Researchers found a diverse community of bugs living in the lake's dark environment, at temperatures of -13C.

Furthermore, they say the lake's life forms have been sealed off from the outside world for some 2,800 years.

Details of the work have been outlined in the journal PNAS.

Lake Vida, the largest of several unique lakes found in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, contains no oxygen, is acidic, mostly frozen and possesses the highest nitrous oxide levels of any natural water body on Earth.

A briny liquid that is approximately six times saltier than seawater percolates throughout the icy environment.

Dr Cynan Ellis-Evans, from the British Antarctic Survey (Bas), who was not involved in the recent research, told BBC News: "There are various lakes that are very salty down there... but this is a really freaky one.

"It's almost frozen solid right to the bottom. But you've got this brine 'mush' in the centre. For several years, they've been trying to get into it."

He said the discovery of microbes at such low temperatures was "a very interesting discovery".

During field campaigns in 2005 and 2010, Alison Murray, from the Desert Research Institute (DRI) in Reno, Nevada, and colleagues drilled out cores of ice from the lake, collected samples of the brine from the frozen material, and assessed the water's potential for harbouring life.

To avoid contaminating the isolated ecosystem, they used stringent procedures and specialised equipment, working under secure, sterile tents on the lake's surface.

The abundance of different chemical compounds present in the lake led the researchers to conclude that chemical reactions were taking place between the brine and the underlying iron-rich sediments, producing the nitrous oxide and molecular hydrogen.

The hydrogen, in part, may provide the energy needed to support the brine's diverse microbial life. In addition, the slow rate of metabolism of these microbes prevents the energy reserves from being quickly depleted.

"It's plausible that a life-supporting energy source exists solely from the chemical reaction between anoxic salt water and the rock," said co-author Dr Christian Fritsen, also from the DRI.

If this is indeed the case, said Dr Murray, it provides "an entirely new framework for thinking of how life can be supported in cryo-ecosystems on Earth and in other icy worlds of the Universe".

Jupiter's icy moon Europa represents one such target.

Dr Ellis-Evans commented: "If you go to somewhere like Europa, this sort of finding is really of interest. You can apply this more or less directly.

He pointed to recent evidence that pockets of slushy ice and liquid water might also persist in Europa's ice shell: "That would be just the sort of system we're talking about here, with limited connections to the outside world," he said.

The PNAS report's publication comes as scientists fly out of the UK to join an effort to drill through the 3km of ice covering Lake Ellsworth, which is hidden beneath the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

The discovery of any microbial communities here would be significant because the lake water may have been sealed off from the outside world for up to half a million years.

Late last year, a Russian team drilled through to Lake Vostok, an even larger lake covered by some 4km of ice. But preliminary analyses of lake water that froze on to the drill bit showed scant evidence for the presence of living organisms.

By Miriam Coleman, Rolling Stone

Chris Stamp, a former co-manager of the Who and founder of the Track Records label, died on Saturday at the age of 70, Billboard reports.

A native of London's East End, Stamp met the Who in 1963 while working with business partner Kit Lambert on a documentary about the British rock scene. Stamp and Lambert became friends with the band and soon became the Who's co-managers. In 1967, the two launched Track Records with the release of the Jimi Hendrix Experience's "Purple Haze" single and the album?"Are You Experienced?"

Black Monday: Feds shut down 130 counterfeit websites

During the biggest online shopping day of the year with consumers estimated to spend $1.5 billion, federal officials teamed up with European law enforcement agencies to shut down over 130 websites hawking illegal counterfeit items on the internet.

Project Cyber Monday 3 marks the third year in a row that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has shut down the websites selling counterfeit goods.

"Everything from Ergobaby carriers to New Era hats, Nike sneakers, Tiffany jewelry, Oakley sunglasses and NFL jerseys, just to name a few. Even counterfeit Adobe software was for sale," ICE Director John Morton said during a conference call with reporters.

ICE's The National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center and Homeland Security Investigations partnered with EUROPOL, the European Union's law enforcement agency, to take down the 101 websites on U.S. internet servers and 31 websites with European domain names.

"Counterfeit Hermes purses, Christian Louboutin shoes and various Nike apparel, all of it fake, all of it substandard," Morton said about the quality of the knock-off items.

According to figures from the Commerce Department intellectual property (IP) theft costs U.S. industries an estimated $200 billion to $250 billion annually.

"When IP rights are violated, jobs are lost, businesses are stolen and ultimately consumers are cheated. Remember, counterfeiters care about making money and only about making money. They don't pay health care. They don't pay pensions. They don't pay taxes. They don't care about the people that work for them and they don't, frankly, care about the consumers who purchase the products," Morton said.

ICE obtained court orders to shut the websites down after investigators purchased items from the websites and verified that the items were knock-offs. No arrests were announced as part of the cyber-Monday crackdown but Morton said the cases were ongoing and could lead to prosecutions.

Along with the website seizures ICE has also worked with PayPal to attempt to seize funds associated with the websites selling the counterfeit goods. Officials will not reveal how many PayPal accounts have been seized citing the ongoing investigation but noted that accounts in excess of $175,000 have been targeted. ICE officials noted that unsuspecting consumers may not only be buying fake items, but that they are providing credit card and other financial information to fraudsters.

How to Trade Beyond Your Comfort Zone

By: DailyForex.com

A reoccurring theme that we will often see is that Forex traders tend to be too one-dimensional. This is probably because of the fact that they are often sold a bill of goods when it comes to trading currencies. They would hear advertisements that suggest that Forex markets are the best market to trade, and while this is probably true, the fact is that they are not the only markets trade. There are times where it makes more sense to be involved in other markets than the Forex market, but it used in conjunction with currency trading can be quite powerful as opposed to using these markets exclusively.

For example, you may find that you are bullish of gold. We certainly are for the long term, and as such want to be exposed to gold as often and as long as possible. However, it is difficult to hold onto a leveraged currency position in the South African rand or the Australian dollar in times of economic uncertainty. Quite often, these positions will get absolutely annihilated because of a run back to the US dollar for safety. It is certainly difficult to hang onto these positions for several years.

Knowing this, there are some alternatives. For example, you may find that buying the GLD ETF a reasonable alternative. This exchange traded fund focuses on physical ownership of gold. In other words, the GLD owns a specific amount of gold. If you are a shareholder in this particular ETF, you actually own a specific amount of gold. The beauty of this though is that it isn't leveraged. It's traded as a simple stock essentially, and as such fluctuations in price aren't as damaging. Because of this, you can hold onto this investment for a long time and essentially have a "core position" in gold over the long term and then go in and out of the currency and futures market to add to your winnings when the markets are trending upwards.

Another tool that traders have in their arsenal is the CFD market. CFD stands for contract for difference, which is essentially betting on whether or not a specific market will go up or down. You don't necessarily own that particular contract, but what you do is have an interest in the underlying financial instrument.

For example, natural gas had been in a wicked bear market for some time until the middle of 2012. If you were to try and sell or go short natural gas contracts on a futures exchange, you might find that it's a bit expensive. After all, the margin required to several thousand dollars, and the markets are very volatile. However, if you are a small trader you can get into the CFD markets and place a trade for whatever size you wish to. This allows you to essentially trade for pennies per tank if you need to, and allows the smaller trader to be involved in markets that typically are out of their reach.

Another advantage to having the ability to trade such small positions is that you can take a longer-term outlook on a particular market. Much like using the ETF above, you can simply have a small position for the long term in various markets. In fact, you can even trade stocks this way, and those particular CFDs have the advantage of operating 24 hours a day. This way, you don't have wicked spikes at the open if you are trading a stock like you can on one of the exchanges.

As you can see, there are various ways to trade the world's markets. Locking yourself into currencies only is a huge disservice to yourself, as there are plenty of trading opportunities in various markets on any given day. You have to understand that although your heart may lie with currencies, the reality is that it all ends up in your base currency at the end of the day. It really doesn't matter what you?re trading, rather that you are trading well and are taking advantage of all the opportunities that you can.

Walk, Bike, Swim Your Way to Better Hearing | Hearing Aid News

In this world of confusing and conflicting information it is sometimes difficult to know what is good for us, and what isnt. The latest hot diet or a popular herbal supplement might be touted as the miracle cure-all, only to be dispelled later when new scientific data unearths the harmful side effects.

With all the fads that are thrown at us, how do we separate fact from hype? How can we know what is truly beneficial for our health, and what is outright dangerous?

One way to debunk the myths beyond relying on common sense ? is to look at the validity and longevity of various claims. Ask yourself: has a particular claim been verified and endorsed by the mainstream medical and scientific community; does it withstand the test of time; or is it just a flash in the pan?

While many so-called facts will fall by the wayside, one steadfastly remains: a link between regular cardiovascular workout and improved hearing. Simply put, maintaining healthy blood vessels and heart through exercise can benefit your ears.

Be Fit, Hear Better

Past and current studies conducted at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio show a direct relation between cardiovascular (CV) fitness and better hearing.

Though hearing acuity and, ultimately, hearing thresholds, are not entirely under our control, changes in certain aspects of physiological health have been shown to impact hearing sensitivity, says Kathleen Hutchinson PhD, Chair and Professor of the universitys Speech Pathology and Audiology Department. Namely, cardiovascular health has been shown to have a synergistic relationship to a persons hearing. We have proven in prior studies that cardiovascular health is linked to hearing thresholds.

Dr. Hutchinson is referring to the research study she and her colleagues, Helaine Alessio, Ph.D., of the Department of Kinesiology and Health, and Rachel Baiduc, B.S., Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology, conducted at Miami University several years ago.

At that time, we found striking consistency whereby persons with low CV fitness, regardless of age, always had worse hearing compared to age-matched individuals with moderate or high CV fitness, Dr. Hutchinson says. Cardiovascular health and fitness seems to be an important mediator of hearing sensitivity.

New Studies, Same Findings

The team is taking the research further, expanding on the knowledge already gained through its previous studies. For example, another variable, otoacoustic emissions ? sounds produced by healthy ears in response to acoustic stimulation have been added to the tests.

By investigating otoacoustic emissions, a way to evaluate the integrity of the cells in the nerve of hearing, we are provided with another lens to examine the relationship between CV fitness and hearing, Dr. Hutchinson explains. The nerve involved in hearing has the very important job of collecting sound gathered by the outer and middle ear and preparing it for transmission to the brain.

For this study, subjects underwent a battery of hearing tests, including otoscopic examination (observation into the subjects ear to ensure that occlusions interfering with the testing process, such as wax build-up, were not present), pure tone hearing thresholds (subjects would indicate when tones of various loudness and pitch were heard to determine a threshold), tympanometry (a measure of ear drum mobility), and others.

Preliminary analysis of the data, Dr. Hutchinson says, reveals a link between hearing and a high cardiovascular fitness level. Though these results clearly produce clinical significance for persons with hearing loss, they are also relevant to all listeners, she says. By maintaining a high level of cardiovascular fitness, even in older age, individuals can help to preserve their delicate hearing system. It is highly recommended that unfit individuals begin even a moderate-intensity workout regime if there is history of hearing loss in the family. Cardiovascular fitness levels do decrease in most people with age, regardless of sedentary or active lifestyles. However, by keeping as fit as possible, one not only lessens the chance of health concerns related to being unfit, but also increases the chance of sustaining normal hearing thresholds even into old age.

The Heart Knows

The fact that the heart muscle needs regular conditioning is nothing new. Doctors have been telling us for years that exercise makes us more resistant to stress, heart attack, and a slew of other health complications.

For optimum results, the American Heart Association advises doing 30 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise at least three or four times each week. Unfortunately, studies show that 60 percent of American adults don?t get the recommended amount of physical activity, and a quarter of all adults are not active at all.

But too often the word exercise gets a bad rap, because many of us think of it in conjunction with feeling the burn, that unpleasant sensation of tears and pulls all over our bodies.

Relax; there is no need to huff, puff, sweat, or suffer because moderate exercise, if done regularly, is just as effective as the high-impact kind, and far less harsh on the joints. Such enjoyable and fun activities as walking, hiking, biking, and swimming are an excellent cardiovascular workout, doctors say, and dont require expensive equipment or gym membership.

As the studies clearly indicate, the key to a better hearing and a good overall health is, literally, just an easy step or lap away.

Remember: stay fit. Your heart and ears ? will thank you for it.

The Worst Baby Advice Ever

New York 1898. New York 1898

Illustration from Sporting Life/Cecil Raleigh and Seymour Hicks/Library of Congress.

In the annals of bad baby advice, a dubious prize goes to Tennessee preacher Michael Pearl, who provoked outrage last year when it came to light that a book he?d written with his wife, To Train Up a Child, was allegedly linked to the deaths of three children by abuse and neglect. An advocate of training children the way one might ?stubborn mules,? Pearl recommends eliminating the ?selfish compulsion? of 6-month-old babies by striking them with wooden spoons or ?flexible tubing.? In a less violent vein, according to this recent video clip, he also believes that devoted mothers can potty-train their infants by the time they?re 2 weeks old.

Inspired by Pearl (and the tale of a 1960s Miami pediatrician who believed in feeding solids to newborns; more about that below), I decided to survey the worst advice given to parents, going back to the 1700s. What stands out most in these books is the chiding tone espoused by the mostly male physicians writing them. From the 1700s until the mid-20th century, when Dr. Benjamin Spock advocated a gentler, instinct-based approach to parenting in The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care, science was often positioned in opposition to motherly instinct, and mothers were repeatedly criticized for being ?anxious, well-meaning, but ignorant,? as one 1916 book put it. Of course, it was often the so-called experts who were ignorant. Scottish physician William Buchan?s 1804 book Advice to Mothers informed them that ?in all cases of dwarfishness or deformity, ninety-nine out of a hundred are owing to the folly, misconduct or neglect of mothers.?

Some of the tips?like infant lard baths?are not necessarily bad, just strange to contemporary eyes. And some are remarkable only for the fact that they were necessary. An 1878 book called Advice to Mother informed said mother that she should not give her baby gin to relieve flatulence. A 1749 essay by a physician advised changing infants? clothing frequently because clean clothes didn?t, in fact, ?rob them of their nourishing Juices.? Here are the other choice examples:

A Spoiled Baby Is a Socialist Baby

Before Spock?s 1946 book, a strict approach dominated baby advice books. Experts advised mothers to keep infants on schedules for feeding and sleeping. Holding them just for the sake of it was considered a sure way to produce what a 1911 text termed a ?little tyrant.? As the U.S. Department of Labor observed in an ?Infant Care? pamphlet in 1929, ?a baby should learn that such habitual crying will only cause his parents to ignore him.?

Under the behaviorist thinking pioneered by psychologist John B. Watson and others, spoiling a baby was an immoral act that could forever curdle a child?s character. Watson advised parents ?never? to ?hug and kiss? their children. A 1916 book warned parents not to bounce babies on their knees, as it would spoil babies and lead to ?wrecked nerves.? In general, wrote physician L. Emmett Holt in 1894, playing with babies was a bad idea: ?Never until four months, and better not until six months.?

As late as 1962, well after Spock?s kinder, gentler approach had become a staple of nightstands across the country, a Miami pediatrician named Walter W. Sackett Jr. came out with a book called Bringing Up Babies, in which he implied that parents who failed to impose strict schedules on their babies were downright unpatriotic. Absolutely no night feedings, he wrote, no matter how young the baby, nor how much it cried. ?If we teach our offspring to expect everything to be provided on demand, we must admit the possibility that we are sowing the seeds of socialism,? Sackett warned, likening overindulgent parents to Hitler and Stalin.

Toilet Train Your Newborns

If there is one pervasive theme in baby advice books from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it is a preoccupation with the bowels. Much of it traces to concern over diarrhea-causing infections that killed many infants, though ?sluggish bowels? were also a concern. ?If we lock up the bowels, we confine the enemy and thus produce mischief,? British doctor Pye Henry Chavasse warned in 1878.

The daily drudgery of cleaning dirty cloth diapers may have been part of the impetus for recommendations to toilet train newborns, but experts often added a moral component. In 1935, a U.S. Department of Labor ?Infant Care? pamphlet called an infant?s regulation of his bowels and bladder a key part of his ?character building.? Mothers were instructed to start bowel training their babies at 2 months of age, holding the baby over the ?chamber? at the precise same time each day, and ?using a soap stick, if necessary? to provoke a movement. By 6 to 8 months, the pamphlet predicted, the baby would be trained, and by 10 months, parents could start in on bladder training. As an added benefit to the mother?s cleaning chores, said infant ?will begin to learn that he is part of a world bigger than that of his own desires.?

Don?t Poison the Baby With Angry Breast Milk

Several advice books suggested that mothers could harm their babies by thinking the wrong sorts of thoughts. The Sadlers, husband-and-wife doctors who collected their wisdom in 1916, blamed ?angry? mothers for causing their babies? colic. Mothers could also run dry by engaging in ?worry, grief, or nagging,? they wrote. In his 1877 book, Advice to a Wife, Chavasse informed mothers not to nurse for too long. Once the baby was past 9 months of age, nursing could cause ?brain disease? in babies and blindness in mothers.

Sitting posture is extremely important in the game of carrom. More often than not, a small number of players will put their bench or chairs away from the carrom board which will figure intricacy for the performer to play a part. As a result if the player legs traverse the pretend column then that will be considered as a foul and this is the major drawback by sitting in this pose. Hence the sitting position of the player matters a lot.
