Army vet accused of fighting with al-Qaida

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) ? A U.S. Army veteran is charged with conspiring with an Al-Qaida group to wage war against the Syrian regime.

Eric Harroun of Phoenix was charged Thursday in federal court in northern Virginia with conspiring to use a weapon of mass destruction outside the U.S. An affidavit states Harroun has been engaged in military action in Syria, siding with rebel forces against the Syrian government. It says he used rocket-propelled grenades in the fighting earlier this year.

On his Facebook page, he claimed credit for downing a Syrian helicopter.

Prosecutors say one of the groups with which Harroun served is the al-Nusrah Front, which is commonly known as al-Qaida in Iraq.

Harroun has made an initial court appearance. A public defender was appointed to represent him in a detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Add cranked-up earphones to the list of health dangers Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants New Yorkers to avoid.

The city Health Department said Wednesday it plans to warn young people they risk hearing loss from listening to personal music players at high volume.

Officials envision a $250,000 social media and marketing campaign. The department's fundraising arm says it has raised $70,000 in donations so far. The plan was first reported by the New York Post.

Other health groups have launched similar efforts.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says excessive noise has caused permanent hearing damage in 1 out of 8 children and teens, and about 1 in 6 adults under age 70.

Bloomberg previously cracked down on smoking, trans fats, salt and large, sugary drinks.

Alberta sticks to bullish forecasting strategy for energy prices

Alberta, which blew through last year?s budget projections after overestimating energy prices, is sticking with its forecasting strategy despite facing a sizable deficit caused in part by its recent miscalculations.

The Progressive Conservative government, however, is planning a summit this summer to explore how it can better estimate energy prices, even as it says last year?s retreat in resources, particularly for bitumen, was impossible to predict.

Alberta Premier Alison Redford?s government has moved away from the more conservative practices of the Ralph Klein regime, which traditionally used lower-than-projected oil prices when budgeting. That contributed to the swelling deficit last year, as it left the province more exposed to a downturn.

The government expects to run a $1.975-billion deficit in 2013-14, saying cash expected to roll in from energy royalties is down sharply because of transportation bottlenecks and a production explosion out of North Dakota. This marks the province?s sixth-straight deficit.

Alberta relies heavily on oil and gas revenue, and royalties dictate its fiscal health. The government is banking on West Texas intermediate oil to average $92.50 (U.S.) a barrel in fiscal 2013, down from its calendar 2013 estimate of $94.05 a barrel, according to the budget it released Thursday. The government relies on industry forecasts when coming up with its own estimate, and the average in the survey, including confidential sources, rang in at $94.28 a barrel, the government said. The confidential estimates alone averaged $94.65 a barrel.

Should WTI drop $1, Alberta?s coffers will be $142-million short of Thursday?s estimate. If the differential between heavy Canadian oil and the North American benchmark grows by 1 per cent, the government will be another $139-million shy of its financial prediction. Interest rates, the exchange rate, and household incomes also affect the government?s budget numbers.

The difference between WTI and the heavy oil produced in Alberta, however, is what hammered Alberta last year. The province now predicts the spread between WTI and Western Canadian Select will be 29 per cent, while the industry believes it will average 27 per cent in the year.

?This is not an optimistic projection,? Minister of Finance Doug Horner told reporters. ?When you take $6-billion [Canadian] out of the revenue projection, we?ve made a very conservative estimate of where the differential will be.?

Official Opposition leader Danielle Smith argues the province is still under threat even though the government?s estimates are less aggressive than last year.

?They are still a little bit rosier than usual. In the past, the way they managed to have a surplus is they would take a low end of what the budget projections are,? she said. ?They are better than last year, but we still think there is a possibility they may be in a problem on that.

?They are still running a $5.5-billion shortfall,? Ms.. Smith, who leads the Wildrose Party, said. ?They haven?t solved the true nature of the problem ? and it is on the spending side. We don?t see any evidence that they are going to get their spending back under control.?

Jack Mintz, chair of the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary, said the government is betting energy prices will rebound. ?I would say this budget is built on hope,? he said. ?There is a serious structural hole.?

The Tories have long argued they, along with private forecasters and governments in Regina and Ottawa, were sideswiped by the speed at which North Dakota?s prolific Bakken light oil play developed. Pipeline shortages deepened the pain. But despite the problematic price predictions, the government will continue with its current budgeting system.

?When we do our projections, we don?t do it. We actually get the industry and the public sector forecasters to give us their numbers, we average that out, we go a little under the average ? there?s the number we use for the budget purposes,? Mr. Horner said.

The government?s oil projection last year was slightly less than the average of its confidential forecasts and slightly higher than all private forecasters. That was slightly more aggressive than the approach from the previous Progressive Conservative government led by Ed Stelmach, and much more aggressive than that of Mr. Klein?s government, which used estimates well below the private sector average.

Alberta plans to host an ?energy forecasting summit? this summer, bringing ?experts from around the world to explore and share best practices and fresh ideas on forecasting,? Mr. Horner told the legislature, according to his prepared speech.

/can trim from here./ The province will also begin borrowing heavily to build capital projects, such as schools. This year alone, it will take $2-billion from its rainy-day fund to make ends meet while raising another $4.2-billion more in debt to pay for infrastructure. It means pouring money into savings funds while at the same time borrowing, saying the funds earn a higher interest rate than the province pays. Over the next three years, Alberta will borrow $11.6-billion for infrastructure, while increasing the value of its two savings funds by just $3.1-billion.

All told, the province?s total net assets ? including infrastructure projects the government says are needed to maintain economic growth ? are projected to increase by a modest $1.2-billion over the next three years, or a total of 2.8 per cent.

GURGAON: Established as go-to guidebooks for travelers across the world, Lonely Planet is now digging deep into the India travel market by launching a new series of guides that offer domestic travelers tips for short escapes within the country.
The ?Short Escape? series, aimed at city dwellers in Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai who are looking for a quick break from the city, was launched here at Kingdom of Dreams.
?In the present corporate scenario, working professionals in India want to maximize their leisure time. With this in mind Lonely Planet designed the travel guides to enable travelers to make most of their time by exploring destinations close to their city,? says Sesh Seshadri, general manager, Lonely Planet India.
Also on the agenda are a set of books that can take the cinema loving tourist to places inside the country that have a Bollywood connection.
?We have also planned, ?Shatabdi Escapes? which will include the destinations that fall on the route covered by Shatabdi Express. Yet another ?Bollywood Escape? series will focus on places which are known for some Bollywood connection, be it a shooting spot for any movie or something else,? says Seshadri.
Last year Lonely Planet had brought out a series of specifically designed guidebooks to enable curious Indian travelers to experience the world via outbound travel.
The domestic guides aim at exploring the potential in the Indian domestic tourism market.
According to the latest data by the Ministry of Tourism, domestic tourism grew at a rate of 13.8 per cent in 2011, with the number of travelers increasing to 851 million from 748 million in 2010.
?The domestic travel market is currently thriving. Our own quantitative and qualitative market research has equipped us to create up-to-date, relevant and inspirational content for domestic travelers,? Seshadri told PTI.
Priced at Rs 395 each guide features 40-45 destinations divided by themes such as hills, heritage, wildlife and resorts. The travel guides outline the best possible routes from the city to the destination, along with distances and fares.
The content also includes travel tips and information on iconic sights, family activities, shopping, restaurants and local food recommendations.
Each of the short escape guides have been compiled by a team of travel writers who have personally visited each of the destinations featured in the book and have tailored the information keeping in mind the paucity of time that Indian working professionals face in their daily life.
?I have been a travel blogger since long, I have done freelancing too. But Lonely Planet guides were a challenge to work upon considering their eye for details as well as the rigorous research. I have been to every single restaurant personally about which I have mentioned in the guide book, ?says Puneetinder Kaur Sindhu, one of the authors of the Bengaluru and Delhi guides.
Quizzed about how travel guides still maintain their place in market even in the era of internet bombardment, Sheshadri says ?The problem is that more than enough information is available for the readers over the internet hence it becomes difficult for them to decide which is authentic and which will be more feasible for them.?

Single gene might explain dramatic differences among people with schizophrenia

Mar. 5, 2013 ? Some of the dramatic differences seen among patients with schizophrenia may be explained by a single gene that regulates a group of other schizophrenia risk genes. These findings appear in a new imaging-genetics study from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

The study revealed that people with schizophrenia who had a particular version of the microRNA-137 gene (or MIR137), tended to develop the illness at a younger age and had distinct brain features -- both associated with poorer outcomes -- compared to patients who did not have this version. This work, led by Drs. Aristotle Voineskos and James Kennedy, appears in the latest issue of Molecular Psychiatry.

Treating schizophrenia is particularly challenging as the illness can vary from patient to patient. Some individuals stay hospitalized for years, while others respond well to treatment.

"What's exciting about this study is that we could have a legitimate answer as to why some of these differences occur," explained Dr. Voineskos, a clinician-scientist in CAMH's Campbell Family Mental Health Research Institute. "In the future, we might have the capability of using this gene to tell us about prognosis and how a person might respond to treatment."

"Drs. Voineskos and Kennedy's findings are very important as they provide new insights into the genetic bases of this condition that affects thousands of Canadians and their families," said Dr. Anthony Phillips, Scientific Director at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction.

Also, until now, sex has been the strongest predictor of the age at which schizophrenia develops in individuals. Typically, women tend to develop the illness a few years later than men, and experience a milder form of the disease.

"We showed that this gene has a bigger effect on age-at-onset than one's gender has," said Dr. Voineskos, who heads the Kimel Family Translational Imaging-Genetics Research Laboratory at CAMH. "This may be a paradigm shift for the field."

The researchers studied MIR137 -- a gene involved in turning on and off other schizophrenia-related genes -- in 510 individuals living with schizophrenia. The scientists found that patients with a specific version of the gene tended to develop the illness at a younger age, around 20.8 years of age, compared to 23.4 years of age among those without this version.

"Although three years of difference in age-at-onset may not seem large, those years are important in the final development of brain circuits in the young adult," said Dr. Kennedy, Director of CAMH's Neuroscience Research Department. "This can have major impact on disease outcome."

In a separate part of the study involving 213 people, the researchers used MRI and diffusion tensor-magnetic resonance brain imaging (DT-MRI). They found that individuals who had the particular gene version tended to have unique brain features. These features included a smaller hippocampus, which is a brain structure involved in memory, and larger lateral ventricles, which are fluid-filled structures associated with disease outcome. As well, these patients tended to have more impairment in white matter tracts, which are structures connecting brain regions, and serving as the information highways of the brain.

Developing tests that screen for versions of this gene could be helpful in treating patients earlier and more effectively.

"We're hoping that in the near future we can use this combination of genetics and brain imaging to predict how severe a version of illness someone might have," said Dr. Voineskos. "This would allow us to plan earlier for specific treatments and clinical service delivery and pursue more personalized treatment options right from the start."

Analysis: Chavistas begin search for next 'Comandante'

One of the world's most flamboyant leaders lost his two-year battle with cancer on Tuesday, ending 14 years of a tumultuous and often bitterly divisive socialist reign. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

Love him or hate him ? and plenty of people in Venezuela and around the world felt one of the two emotions ? firebrand President Hugo Chavez?s brand of leadership will be hard to replace.

Chavez died Tuesday?at age 58, after a long battle with cancer that was shrouded in mystery and prevented him from being inaugurated for a fourth term.

In response to news of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez's death, the U.S. released a statement saying, in part, that the U.S. "remains committed to policies that promote democratic principles, the rule of law, and respect for human rights." For two years, the U.S. has not had an ambassador in Venezuela, the largest exporter of oil in the hemisphere. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Beyond the country?s borders, question marks loom as to whether any regional leader will step into Chavez?s shoes and become the region?s voice of socialism and anti-Americanism.

Chavez, a self-declared socialist, often criticized the United States on its history of intervention in the Americas and Washington's stance on countries such as Iran.

In a 2006 address at the U.N. General Assembly, Chavez called President George W. Bush "the devil."

"The hegemonistic?pretensions?of the American empire are placing at risk the very existence of the human species," he said during the speech.

Such declarations gave voice to many wishing to shake-off perceived American dominance of Latin America.? His habit of using Venezuela?s vast oil wealth to help prop-up governments in the name of the "Bolivarian Revolution" ? named after Simon Bolivar who led 19^th-century movements to end Spain?s colonial rule throughout Latin America ? won him many friends.

He also supported cooperation among Latin American nations, and helped establish the Union of South American Nations, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas and the Bank of the South.

Nobody in power in the Americas has Chavez?s charisma or power to galvanize millions. More importantly, no other leader ? even the ones that share his ideas like Ecuador?s Rafael Correa, Bolivia?s Evo Morales or Argentina?s Cristina Kirchner ? has the resources and influence of a country such as Venezuela, which has the largest proven oil reserves in the world.

NBC's Mark Potter discusses the impact of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez's death on the country and on the relationship between Venezuela and the United States.

So while many Chavistas are saying "Long live to the King," it is not clear how long the king?s project will survive internationally. The same is the case within Venezuela, but more so.

According to Venezuela?s constitution, an election will need to be called within 30 days of Chavez?s death. Who the Chavistas choose to succeed "El Comandante" will help determine the future of the Bolivarian Revolution.

If Chavez? will carries beyond the grave, Vice President Nicolas Maduro will be the candidate in the upcoming election. It isn?t only that the 50-year-old former Caracas bus driver and union organizer was appointed by Chavez as his successor, but also that he represents the closest thing to 'Chavismo' without Chavez.?

Preferred candidate
Maduro lacks Chavez?s charisma and popular appeal. At the same time, Maduro accepts all the tenants of Bolivarian socialism ? a mix of authoritarianism, state owned enterprises and anti-U.S. rhetoric functioning under some form of democratic governance.

It is no coincidence that Maduro is the preferred candidate of Cuba, Chavez?s closest ally and supporter.

Maduro?s main opposition within his sphere is Diosdado Cabello, a former military officer and currently the President of the National Assembly. Cabello is as wooden publicly as Maduro, but he has the support of another major player in Venezuelan politics and Chavismo itself?? the army.

The men in uniform may decide that it is time for a change of regime and not just a change in leader.? Under their influence, there could be a rapprochement with the business sector and thawing in relations with United States.?

Nevertheless, whoever ends up being the Chavistas? candidate, and assuming he wins the election, the project may still be in danger: Venezuela is still dogged by inflation rates of between 5 and 30 percent a year, a large government deficit, alarming rates of urban violence, shortages in many goods and services, such as electricity, milk, meat and toilet paper.?

So even if the military accepts a Maduro presidency, it isn?t a given that they will support civilian leader to whom they see as too leftist and too close to the Cubans indefinitely. It is also possible that there will be infighting among the Chavistas? civilian groups, both the politicians who are in charge of the state machinery and the "boligarchs," the moguls who have profited immensely with Chavez in power.?

The reaction of the Chavista popular bases is another potential problem. El Comandante won?t be there to convince them to wait for better times, to accept the shortages, inflation, insecurity and other realities of a dysfunctional and inefficient government.

But equally important, these sectors could become a threat to Chavez?s successor as many are more radical than their leaders...and some are armed.

Galaxy S III bug disables lock screen, grants full access, tests patience

Lock screens are around for a reason: to keep people from getting where they shouldn't. They aren't always infallible, though, and a few weeks ago, we saw a vulnerability in several builds of iOS 6 that granted access to the phone module without a passcode. Then, a couple of days ago, we reported on a Galaxy Note II bug that allows the quick-fingered to launch anything immediately behind the lock screen. Now, a similar flaw has been found on the Galaxy S III that breaks the lock screen altogether, permitting full use of the phone. To replicate the bug, you'll need to tap the "Emergency Call" button on the lock screen, then go into the ICE (emergency contacts) menu. From there, press the home button, followed quickly by the power button, and that's it. If successful, pressing the power button again will bring up the home screen straight away, and what's more, the lock screen won't return until the handset is restarted. Sounds worryingly simple, right? In our experience, not so much.

We first tried this method on an S III running Android 4.0.4 ICS, and a Note II for good measure, but to no avail. Then, we had a crack at an S III running 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, and were close to giving up trying to replicate it when voilà, it worked. We hoped to provide you with a video of the bug, but it must be camera shy. Despite literally hundreds of attempts in front of the lens and several more behind it, we've only managed it once -- we found it impossible to nail down the correct timing between the home and power button pushes. Samsung's likely aware of the bug already and when quizzed about the Note II vulnerability, said a fix for lock screen issues on affected "Galaxy devices" was in the works (read: they didn't say the Note II specifically). We've reached out for comment just to be sure, but until a patch is provided, keep your phone concealed from nosey types who read tech sites and have saint-like patience.

Facebook's move to mobile powered by intensive internal training

Facebook's made no bones about the fact that its focus has shifted from a desktop web- to a mobile-focused company. Today, Director of Mobile Engineering, Mike Shaver informed us exactly how the company is making the change. It turns out, the company started an intensive training program last July in order to bring people up to speed on coding native apps for iOS and Android. How intensive? The program, run by Big Nerd Ranch, is five straight days of training for eight hours each day -- after which, those who make it through can "start writing code for apps the very next Monday." While roughly 80 percent of employees who take the training are engineers, it's important to note that any Facebook employee can take the course. Thus far, designers, product managers, engineering managers and even a recruiter are among the 450 who have completed the training.

It's all a part of the Social Network's plan to build "mobile empathy" among all of its employees, and getting everyone thinking mobile first. Facebook's able to go this route because it keeps the bar high when hiring new employees, seeks generalists to fill engineering slots, and folks are expected to get up to speed as needed once they've joined Zuckerberg's flock. So, if you thought building that slick new game for Android or iOS was going to give you a leg up on the coding competition when seeking work at Facebook HQ... think again.

Getting organized in your home can be less expensive and easier than you think. There are items all around your home that can help you get the clutter in order. Here are just a few tips to get you off to a good start:

A big problem is spices, they get lost in the cabinet, take up tons of room and are always hard to see. If this is a problem in your home use a?mop holder to store spices on the inside of a cabinet door.

Too many craft supplies and a place to put them is a typical problem. Arrange crayons, colored pencils and more in an over-the-door shoe organizer. You have all your supplies organized and easy to see in no time.

Use the shoe organizer for anything. It can also be great for cleaning supplies.

If you need decorations for your playroom walls and you have too many board games this is a great solution. Take the glass out of frames and frame the board games and hang on the walls. Attach the game pieces in little baggies to the frame.

What about all that jewelry? If you could actually see it you may even wear it more. Hang a peg board on the wall in your closet and hang your necklaces from it.

Need a place to put your earrings? How about an ice cube tray?

The Agile School: Self-Organizing Classroom: Big Picture

The Engagement Cycle is?inspired?directly from the Scrum?framework, a highly collaborative Agile approach to innovative product development. The Engagement Cycle provides an iterative and incremental approach to learning, allowing learners to inspect and adapt their own learning. The Engagement Cycle is short?time box, usually a week, where learners commit to learning goals to be demonstrate by the end of?time-box, and then inspect and adapt the results and process for self-improvement.? It is the key enabling constraint for rapid learning and collaboration.

1. Plan - The teacher presents learning challenges, usually in the form of ?learning outcomes or project outcomes, and provides a forum for discussion to center?on the learners and ensure clarity?on the outcomes. Learners have choice?in what they commit ?to achieve in the Engagement Cycle. Learners break down the challenges into activities and tasks, with?choice?in how they achieve the challenge.

2. Huddle - as the learners are self-organizing, they coordinate their activities with one another in a huddle, usually daily. They state what chose to do yesterday, what they choose to do today, and what problems they may need help in overcoming. This provides clarity on the progress of learning.

3. Demo - At the end of the Engagement Cycle is a formal?demonstration?of learning. Although demonstration of learning happens?throughout?the Engagement Cycle, this is the formal finish line to demonstrate the learning challenges were met. It provides clarity through immediate and relevant feedback on if the learning challenge was met. It provides valuable insight on how to adapt learning to the differentiated needs of the classroom.

4. Reflect - Learners reflect on their collaboration, their individual performance, the learning process, and the learning environment to?celebrate?their strengths, achievements, and to commit to a clear improvement challenge?in the next Engagement Loop. Whereas the Demo is about ?providing clarity on?the outcomes of the learning, Reflect is about evoking?clarity of the current?process and self-improving it together. A self-organing classroom is a self-improving classroom. This formally happens at the end of the Engagement Loop, but, I have seen classrooms Reflect daily with amazing results.

Characteristics of a Self-Organing Classroom?

A Self-Organzing Classroom has unique?characteristics?that serve as scaffolding structures to support and evoke self-organization, self-improvement, and the?achievement of learning challenges. These are also characteristics of an Agile environment that enable self-organzing teams to develop innovative products.

1. Visual - the learning?environment?provides radical clarity through providing highly visual learning radiators. Learning radiators provide?unambiguous?clarity on the learning challenges, expectations, progress, issues, and norms on how the classroom?self-organizes, protecting against chaos that ambiguity can cause. It makes often invisible?collaboration and meta-cognition activities transparent, so that the classroom can inspect and adapt their own learning.

2. Rapid Feedback - Throughout the framework, rapid and?relevant?feedback is provided at many levels, for individuals, for the?interactions between learners and the environment, realtime feedback of learning and collaboration in progress, and the outcomes of learning. It enables the classroom to inspect and adapt quickly to differentiate their own learning. It does not wait for a test or a grade, it happens throughout the learning experience, and empowers learners to sense and respond themselves to the feedback when it is relevant.

3. Pull - The Self-Organzing Classroom moves towards more "Pull" and less "Push". ?Learners have incrementally increase the?choice they have, pulling in?challenges?and activities at their own rate at their own level. Although students may or may not develop their own goals, they should at a minimum have the?structures?and empowerment to pull the challenges and activities in at their own rate. By?centering?on the?learners present and intrinsic motivation, the challenges?"pull" them in, ?versus being "pushed" onto them as something to comply to.

4. Self-Organzing -??Is a specific form of self-directed learning combined with collaboration.?Self-organized learners work without out direct supervision,?released?from command and control style of instruction, to accomplish clear goals.. This does not mean self-organized learners do not have rules, to the contrary, it is?essential?to provide enabling constraints for self-organization to emerge. Self-organization emerges within simple scaffolding structures, which is what this framework provide. This framework provides just enough rules to provide guard rails against chaos, while enough space to empower learners to choose and adapt their own learning path together.

The Empowerment Dial

The Empowerment Dial is a visual information radiator unique to this?framework. It?is the lever to provide gradual release of control from the teacher to the learners, from just individual learning to collaborative learning. It?incrementally builds and stretches the self-organzing capacity of the classroom, from the teacher's capacity to empower as well as the learners capacity to take on more responsibility. This is the safety dial to protect against the perceived and real?risks of a classroom spilling into the chaotic classroom. It provides a visible and incremental path, through 5 discrete stages of empowering learners and and transforming the teacher from the traditional "sage on the stage" to the coveted "guide on the side". ?From Level 1, on-boarding?the classroom by acclimating them to the engagement loop and?visualizing?learning through learning radiators, without changing the current level of ?empowerment, to Level 5, where the classroom is fully self-organized?and perhaps even developing?their?own learning outcomes and learning activities in full collaboration. The Empowerment Dial provides highly?visible and explicit expectations on the roles and?responsibilities, so that delegation of authority is unambiguous and can be respected by all. The 5C's of Flow is instilled in the Empowerment Dial as it is throughout the entire?learning?framework.

Summary

Through real experience of applying this model in classrooms, I believe this provides the right approach to a classroom of extreme engagement, empowerment, while providing the 21st Century skills in to thrive in the present and in the future. Be aware that this post is not a step by step guide, but, the overarching structure and?characteristics?the Self-Organzing Classroom guide will follow. With that said, as the real experiences of provide real feedback, this model will change, as it is still in it's infancy. We will inspect and adapt the model as we learn more. ?I invite your feedback and contribution.

I aslo ask for your advice on naming the framework and to?participate in it's continued development and application with me. I am considering dropping the name of The Agile Based Learning Environment (ABLE) upon the recent insights that it is a cross-pollination of Agile, not an Agile adoption into education. I have used the term the Self-Organzing Classroom (SOC) throughout, and in writing the guide, but, I am not sure if that will stick. There is a another great educational approach out there urge you to explore, called the Self-Organzied Learning Environment (SOLE), which I actually started to use until I discovered their site. It is a very different model, but, I believe complimentary to this one. Thanks for you help!

SEFFNER, Fla. (AP) ? Authorities hope to get a better look at a sinkhole that swallowed a man in his Florida home once demolition crews knock down the remaining walls of the house Monday and begin clearing away the debris.

Crews on Sunday razed more than half the home, managing to salvage some keepsakes for family members who lived there.

The opening of the sinkhole has been covered by the home, but once emergency officials and engineers can see inside it more clearly, they could begin planning how to deal with it. They also need to decide what will happen to the two homes on either side of the now-demolished house. Experts say the sinkhole has "compromised" those homes, but it's unclear whether steps can be taken to save them.

Jeremy Bush, 35, tried to save his brother, Jeff, when the earth opened up and swallowed him Thursday night.

On Sunday morning, Bush and relatives prayed with a pastor as the home ? where he lived with his girlfriend, Rachel Wicker; their daughter, Hannah, 2; and others ? was demolished and waited for firefighters to salvage anything possible from inside. The home was owned by Leland Wicker, Rachel's grandfather, since the 1970s.

The operator of the heavy equipment worked gingerly, first taking off a front wall. Family belongings were scooped onto the lawn gently in hopes of salvaging parts of the family's 40-year history in the home.

As of Sunday afternoon ? when demolition had stopped for the day and only a few walls remained ? a Bible, family photos, a jewelry box and a pink teddy bear for Hannah were among the items saved. Firefighters also were able to pick out the purse of one of the women in the home.

Cheers went up from family, friends and neighbors each time something valuable was salvaged.

Wanda Carter, the daughter of Leland Wicker, cradled the large family Bible in her arms. She said her mother and father had stored baptism certificates, cards and photos between the pages of that Bible over the years.

"It means that God is still in control, and He knew we needed this for closure," she said, crying.

Carter said she spent from age 11 to 20 in the home, and she had to close her eyes as the home was knocked down.

"Thank you for all of the memories and life it gave us," she said.

The Rev. John Martin Bell of Shoals Baptist Church said he had been with the family all morning. "We just prayed with them," he said. He added that all five who lived in the house ? Bush, Wicker, Hannah and two others ages 50 and 45 ? were in need of support and prayers from the community.

Several generations of family members lived in the home at the time of the ground collapse, including Jeff Bush, the man now presumed dead.

Jeremy Bush tried to save his brother by jumping into the sinking dirt hole. He had to be pulled out of the still-shifting hole by a Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputy, who was visibly shaken when talking about the incident more than a day later.

"I've never seen anything move so fast and do so much destruction," Deputy Douglas Duvall said.

The search for Jeff Bush, 37, was called off Saturday. He was in his bedroom Thursday night in Seffner ? a suburb of 8,000 people 15 miles east of downtown Tampa ? when the ground opened and took him and everything else in his room. Five others in the house at the time escape unharmed as the earth crumbled.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation. Detective Larry McKinnon said the sheriff's office and the county medical examiner cannot declare Bush dead if his body is still missing. Under Florida law, Bush's family must petition a court to declare him deceased.

"Based on the circumstances, he's presumed dead; however the official death certificate can only be issued by a judge and the family has to petition the court," McKinnon said.

The area around Seffner is known for sinkholes due to the geography of the terrain, but they are rarely deadly. No one ? from longtime public safety officials to geologists ? could remember an incident where a person was sucked into the earth without warning.

Khanh Ho: Presumed Incompetent: Breaking the Silence of Racism in Academia

There's a hot new book making the rounds in the academic world: Presumed Incompetent. The book addresses the predicament that women of color high up in the ivory tower find themselves in -- a predicament few of us really know. Here it is in a nutshell: often, women of color are recruited to universities in order to represent intellectual change, to burnish the image of so-called diversity. Yet so many people have a hard time getting promotion, achieving that holy grail of the academic ladder -- tenure.

And this is precisely because they have to overcome so much. There's a lot of institutionalized racism, even among the liberal crowd of tenured radicals. In fact, one of my friends, a law professor put it best: "It's the liberal who can often have the least self-consciousness about the pain they inflict." She smiled wryly and put on her best NPR voice. "I can't be a racist; I voted for Obama."

Women of color aren't taken seriously because there exists a bias that is extremely destructive: the perception that they are tokens, that they are penny-ante players in the high stakes intellectual poker match. Yet institutions get many material benefits by recruiting people of color. And yes, they get even more by dumping them before they can become permanent. Another friend put it this way: "It's like leasing a new car if you don't grant tenure; you'll get a new one in a darker color, only it will cost you less." So, the revolving door of academia perpetrates and perpetuates a great loss... and the university can never be enriched by the gifts that a mature scholar of color can bring to the intellectual smorgasbord.

The problem is that you really can't talk about this issue: it's taboo. To do so is tantamount to grousing -- as outr? as scratching and farting at a cocktail party. And in large part this is why the system has been allowed to perpetuate itself, unchecked. I suspect this is why all my academic friends -- white and black, gay and straight, minority and majority -- are putting up images of the book on their Facebook Page. They don't say much except "I'm ordering mine" but the proliferation of this cryptic message is enough: indicating a tectonic shift.

Though Presumed Incompetent itself focuses on women of color, it is more generally about scholars of color -- both men and women -- who find themselves not only having to perform the rigorous work of making it in academia but, also, having to deal with the battle fatigue of challenging the bias that dogs their every action. It can be a tiring, thankless job being a person of color in academia -- one feels like an island in a vast, uncharted ocean. This is bourne out by the many discrimination law suits that are popping up at universities left and right, nowadays.

Presumed Incompetent is an historic work for one key reason: it voices discontents through the personal accounts of high profile scholars who have already made it, who have experienced the outrages of the academic mill...but are secure enough in their own careers to now be able to talk about some of the tribulations of being a person of color without appearing to whine. You can't say they're belly-achers or that they're working through a pile of sour grapes. They're intellectual superstars; go ahead: google them.

I'm glad that there is a book out there that can tell it like it is -- a book that can do the talking for those who have to remain silent. Only in this way, with one party speaking to the other, can we begin a useful dialog. I hope everybody sticks Presumed Incompetent's image on their Facebook page. Already, I hear it has sold out. May it sell out many times more. May it make it to the Bestseller's List and become anointed alongside the collected works of J.K. Rowling and the most compelling Vampire Erotica available. It will make the world a much, much better place.

Baby Bump Update | the candace

Still playing catch up, yay!

Now that it?s finally official ? I?m growing a human ? I?m sure you?can?t wait?to be inundated with all things baby. ?Should we let the nonsense and self-indulgence begin?

Main scoop:?We hustled around visiting family and friends in Minnesota (we even squeezed in a baby shower!) and then drove straight from the airport right into a hectic work week. (After surviving a blizzard that closed down the Denver airport for a few hours.) Although lovely, everything about this week was ridiculously tiring.

Speaking of the shower, we got loads of adorable baby girl clothes (how can you resist?), but my sister-in-law snuck in this awesome outfit just for me. I LOVE IT. I?m telling you, stripes and baby bumps go together like my MIL?s homemade hot chocolate and whip cream.

The Science:?Baby Center recap ? 33 weeks.?She?s way longer than a footlong sub sandwich (can you tell I?m hungry?), clocking in around 17 inches according to Baby Center. Even when she?s twisting up my insides with her Harlem Shake, I still love to feel her move and watch her. She fills me up with so much love and heartburn.

Body morphing:?Weight gain is back up to 15lbs. I?m really feeling this extra weight in my back and legs, mostly because I?m on my feet all day. My toes have been cramping again in the evenings but haven?t turned into full blown leg cramps thankfully.

Sexy stuff!?Of course I battled poo troubles while travelling back to Minnesota. The doc warned to stay extra hydrated but it?s so hard when you are a nervous lady and hustling from car to shuttle to plane to car to a different house each night.

Food drama:?I made myself sick one night in Minnesota, eating too much too late and guzzling too much coffee. I had to sleep on my MIL?s couch, propped up with pillows and Tums, after spending time hurling in the bathroom. I realize I should know better but my nerves and poo drama encouraged me to make poor choices.

Exercising??My only exercise this week was hanging out at the baggage claim, finding restrooms and getting nervous for my baby shower.

To Dos:?Now that my stint in retail is over, I get to focus only on baby butts and coaching my track kids. I?m so lucky. I?m looking forward to enjoying a slower pace before this little angel squirts out of my uterus and things get rowdy up in here again.

And randomly:?We only have one more week of our birthing class. The class is (mostly) helpful and I was hoping to meet a few local mommy friends at the same time. But I?m a snob. Can I vent for a second? You see, Hubs and I managed to make it to class on time, despite our frantic day/week. But not this one couple?

We waited for them. I?m mean, it?s the right thing to do. (Is it?) Plus, it?s no big deal for a pregnant lady like myself whose EFFIN back hurts. A pregnant lady who has an early morning and long day of travel ahead of her the very next day. ?A pregnant lady who thinks a class from 6.30 to 9.30pm is already way past her bedtime. A pregnant lady that has been away from home and on her feet for twelve hours already. A pregnant lady who hasn?t been home all week, in fact. A pregnant lady who is constipated.

After 20 minutes, we decided to go ahead and get started by reviewing a few things. I?m thankful for the exercise, I didn?t realize how much I had forgotten. I started to relax and settle in. Then guess who shows up, slurping their pop and chowing down on their McDonalds? Yep. Do you know how good McDonalds smells when you?ve snarfed down a crappy dinner of randomness because you have no decent food in the house, haven?t bothered to grocery shop since you?ll be gone for a week and WERE TRYING TO MAKE IT TO CLASS ON TIME? Do you know how loud rustling for rogue fries is? Do you know how much I love fries? Do you know waiting 25 minutes for almost anything makes me angry?

So, we started the review OVER for their benefit. Guess who pays no attention to the instructor anyway, talking and joking and cuddling with each other? Yeah, these guys. It was INFURIATING. The fact that the dude wears too much cologne and the girl talks in a whiny baby voice to him (which he can barely hear and constantly asks her to repeat) has no real impact but irks the crap out of me anyway.

Speaking of being late (hypocrite?much?), this post is a few days overdue (just like a good friend of mine). Let?s hope we both get back on schedule. You can do it, Emily!!!

The race consists of a grueling 1,000-mile trek through unpredictable wilderness to the old gold rush town of Nome on Alaska's western coast. Whoever reaches Nome first wins a new truck and a cash prize of $50,400. The rest of the $600,000 purse will be split between the next 29 mushers to cross the finish line. The iconic race, however, seems to be about more than a monetary prize for most involved: a competition of human versus wild.

Developer pledges to continue Berlin Wall removal

BERLIN (AP) ? A German property developer has rejected calls to halt work to remove one of the last remaining stretches of the Berlin Wall, despite angry protests against the plan.

Maik Uwe Hinkel says work to move a 22-meter (yard) section of the 1.3 kilometer (3/4 mile) section of the wall will resume next week.

On Friday, hundreds of protesters stopped workers from moving the 19 concrete slabs, each about 1.2 meters (4 feet) wide, to make way for an access road to a luxury condominium being built on the banks of the reunited city's Spree river.

Hinkel said in a statement Saturday that his company has all necessary permits to move the mural-covered slabs and the road will also benefit the reconstruction of a bridge destroyed in World War II.

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's bickering government and opposition need to create "a sense of political and economic viability," giving businesses confidence and setting the stage for a vital international aid deal, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Saturday.

Kerry stressed to business leaders the importance of Egyptians coming together around human rights, freedom and speech and religious tolerance. Equally essential, he said, is uniting "to meet the economic challenge of this particular moment."

He arrived in Cairo, the latest stop on his first overseas trip as a member of President Barack Obama's second-term Cabinet, intending to press all sides to come to a basic agreement on Egypt's direction ahead of parliamentary elections that begin next month.

Of great concern, too, is the ability of Egypt to undertake the reforms necessary to qualify for a $4.8 billion International Monetary Fund loan package. Steps could include increasing tax collections and curbing energy subsidies.

Agreement with the IMF, contingent on ending the political chaos that has ensued since President Mohammed Morsi's election, would unlock significant U.S. assistance, including portions of Obama's $1 billion pledge last April.

"It is paramount, essential, urgent," Kerry told business leaders, "that the Egyptian economy gets stronger, gets back on its feet and it's very clear that there is a circle of connections in how that can happen.

"To attract capital, to bring money back here, to give business the confidence to move forward, there has to be sense of security, there has to be a sense of political and economic viability."

Kerry, who was to meet with Morsi on Sunday, said he would tell the president that that U.S. assistance would depend on Egyptian reforms and the IMF agreement.

"It is clear to us that the IMF arrangement needs to be reached and we need to give the market place some confidence," Kerry said.

Several hundred people protested outside the government offices where Kerry planned to meet with Foreign Minister Amr Kamel. They burned Kerry's pictures and chanted that Washington was siding with Morsi's ruling Muslim Brotherhood.

The political turmoil has scared away tourists and foreign investors, eroding Egypt's foreign reserves by nearly two-thirds of what it was before the uprising. Those reserves, which stand at less than $14 billion, are needed to pay for subsidies that millions of poor Egyptians rely on for survival.

Kerry met with opposition figures before a round-table discussion with members of the business community. He described the first session as "very, very spirited."

According to the U.S. State Department, Kerry also spoke by telephone with Mohammed ElBaradei, a Nobel laureate who heads the National Salvation Front, an opposition coalition calling for an election boycott.

Kerry met with Amr Moussa, a former minister under ex-President Hosni Mubarak who's now aligned with the Salvation Front. Moussa, an ex-Arab League head, ran for president last summer.

A statement from Moussa's office said the two talked about how the U.S. could support Egypt economically.

Kerry's talks with the league's current leader, Nabil Elaraby, covered the uprising in Syria, where 70,000 people have died in fighting over nearly two years.

The Salvation Front says it could consider participating in elections if parts of a new constitution are changed, police stop using excessive force against protesters and if an inclusive government of the Christian minority, women, and liberals is formed.

They say now is not the time for elections that will further polarize the country while violent clashes continue to take place between protesters and security forces, further shaking the faltering economy.

They accuse Morsi and the Brotherhood of dominating power in Egypt, effectively stepping in to the same role as Mubarak and failing to carry out reforms while also seeking to instill a more religiously conservative system.

Morsi's administration and the Brotherhood say their opponents, who have trailed significantly behind Islamists in all elections since the uprising, are running away from the challenge of the ballot box and are trying to overturn democratic gains.

Egypt has been locked in political crisis for months amid successive waves of protests against Morsi that have turned into deadly clashes and rioting.

As Kerry was meeting with opposition figures, including some who have joined the election boycott, activists in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura say a 35-year-old protester was killed when an armored police vehicle crushed him to death during violent anti-Morsi protests before dawn on Saturday.

A 14-year-old boy was reported to be shot in the head and critically wounded.

In the restive Suez Canal city of Port Said, a police vehicle ran over five people Saturday after protesters marching along a main street refused to allow the car through.

Kerry's visit to Egypt is the sixth leg of a nine-nation trip through Europe and the Middle East.
